Topic: what's so special about the sonic series?

what is so special about the sonic series?i am a big sonic hater!how do you people call that entertainment?(sonic generations kinda ruined it for me)(generations was the only one i ever played)

I haven't played many modern Sonic games, but I grew up with a Sega Genesis. I loved Sonic 2,3, Knuckles, and CD. I feel like at the time platformers were the top games on home consoles, and Sonic was a very different game then those that had come before. Previous platformers had been slower paced, more deliberate, more calculating. There was a real sense of freedom in just running past everything. The multi-tiered nature of the level design was always very satisfying and created the opportunity for further exploration of every area. Some of the music was fantastic, Sonic 2's tunes are unforgettable. What really sticks out though it that it was just jaw dropping. I remember going to the Software Ect at the mall and playing the SNES with Super Mario World, and Genesis with Sonic 2 side by side. Now Mario World is fantastic, probably my favorite Mario today, but Sonic 2 was like something you'd never seen before. The beginning of the Chemical Plant Zone Act 1 stands out stand out in my mind of an example of this. You could go so fast that the only thing in focus on the screen was the blue ball of hedgehog while the rest of the environment flashed by so quick that it looked like mush and the frame rate refused to drop. At the time it felt incredibly different then anything that had come before, and the Genesis seemed all powerful for it. At the end of the day Sonic was a better fit for a 16-bit world, he really failed to age with grace like his plumber rival.

Back in the days, Sonic was an example of good platforming with levels to explore in many ways, some thing that Mario dind't have (sorry, pipes and bans plants doesnt offer much to explore). The first levels in the first Sonic games are simply amazing, how the desing is mado so you can move as fast as you can and also be meticulous at your jumps. But today, Sonic 2D games are just "go to the right as fast as you can" and 3D games are confusing.

So, Sonic is a name that had good games, some of them masterpieces, but today... Well... Let's simply dont talk about them.

That's the special about Sonic.

I've grown up with the Sonic series my whole life, but just recently I started to appreciate the series more for what it does and how good the games are. The Genesis Sonic games are faaaantastic and really provide that great sense of speed with the top-notch platforming. I don't agree that most 2D games in the series are just "hold right to win" as Sonic Advance and Sonic 4 have shown us. The 3D games started out great, faded a little, were pretty dang bad, and are now getting back to the greatness of Sonic Adventure which is a really fantastic experience and has probably the best levels in and 3D Sonic game. I don't know why you would call them confusing but I think this post is plenty long anyway.

I have only played(But like) Sonic 1 and 2, and they're both really fun. I wish they were on the 3DS in fact, I'd get them.

I think Mario is better then Sonic for the most part, but, Sonic is still one of my favorites. I personally actually like the characters. From Sonic, Tails, Knuckles (probably my favorite), Eggman, and even occasionly Shadow.

The games themselves are usually fun, and decent platformers as well....sure, some recent ones like Sonic 06, and Unleashed are just...ok. But personally, I love the Adventure series, and Sonic Colors, and Sonic Generations.

All they need, is more Knuckles.

I thought I didn't like Sonic either. UNTILL I played Sonic Advance. After playing that it only got better with Sonic and Sonic 2.

You can't compare Sonic and Mario IMO, though I do think the earlier Sonic games had better level-design and thus more replayability

You are judging an entire series based on one game?

yeah. Starting with Generations could be a little awkward...though, I think it's a great game, it's more of a 'already a fan' service.

Sonic is awesome, but Mario sucks. There's your answer.

Let me guess, was it the 3DS version?

Well, Mr. Hater, I am going to assume that you hate Sonic because you think it's the "popular" thing to do. For a while, the hate was semi-justified. Sonic hit with what was called a "Dork Age" and the games weren't very good (better than many will tell you but I digress). This caused some people to begin to hate on the Blue Blur. This became popular, so more people began mocking Sonic. However, the series has gotten itself back together, and now people hate because they think it's "funny" or "cool". If this describes you, I would reconsider attacking Sonic until you have some real reasons to do so.

I do have to agree with @The_Other_M about even the not-so-good Sonic games, still not being as bad as people say.
Even Sonic 06 really....though I have nightmares of Silver picking me up and throwing me with his mind powers, leaving me helpless and in pain......"IT'S NO USE! taaake this! IT'S NO USE!"
