5th Gen for me, the introduction of 3d really blew apart what was possible with games

Rimmer: "Look, I think we've all got something to bring to this conversation, but I think that from now on the thing you should bring is silence."

Homer: "Oh people can come up with statistics to prove anything Kent. Forfty percent of all people know that."

@sub12: Lol I am not mad in fact it would have been pretty boring if Genesis did do what Nintendid lol. Competition can be a good thing at times and the 16 bit era proved it. I was lucky enough to have a SNES and a Genesis during that time and I enjoyed them equally. I can't say I liked one better then the other. On the one hand SNES had Mario and Link and a good amount of RPGs while Sega had Sonic, Streets of Rage and their Sports library was far better then SNES.

Heck even today its why I have a Wii U and PS4 as my current gen systems.

4th and 6th gens. They just have so many awesome games. The N64 also gets a shout out.

They all have their merits and you could argue they just get better because each gen just means a bigger library.

I'd say N64 era was the best because the change from 16 to 32/64 bit was bigger than anything before or since.

Honourable mentions to 8-bit for all the incredible bedroom programmers and PS2 gen for the way they refined 3D gaming and because it had 4 very different consoles.

There's only 3 generations:
1. The good ol' days BEST
2. Last gen
3. Current gen WORST

I'd say it's a close call between the 4th Gen & the 6th Gen.

4th Gen - This is when I first started gaming, and many of the iconic games from this gen are just as playable today as they were the day they came out (this isn't just nostalgia speaking either, since I played Super Metroid & Yoshi's Island for the first time ever within the past two years, and they've stood out just as high as the great current gen games to me).

6th Gen - This is the console generation where I really started to refine my tastes, it holds more of my favorite games than any other gen (Kingdom Hearts, FFX, Soulcalibur III*, Okami, Ace Combat 4, Twilight Princess, Melee, Metroid Fusion, Minish Cap, Sacred Stones, Kingdom Hearts II).

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

GBA/GameCube generation. No need to experiment with graphics styles/leaps, or attract new people to gaming, or hype a "next gen" experience. Just good enough looking games made to be played by people who have been playing the games all along. That was the GBA/GameCube generation and it was the best combo as well for 2D/3D gaming that we'll never see ever again!
