haha, you jerk! had to keep that one Mike Myers pic in there. haha
Edit Time! I will have you know though, that i honestly did Laugh Out Loud when i saw that. it took me a second to see what you did.
Then it was worth it trawling through 10-15 pages of Kate Winslet Google images, discarding ones with a bit too much cleavage (or worse! - this is a family site after all), duplicated images or ones that I wasn't sure were actually Kate Winslet.

No really, you got me on that one. Where was the nun pic from? I have no idea.
Its too bad you had to disregard the cleavage pics. :cries:

I'm British, but I live in Malaysia right now. Well, I've only lived in the UK for about 3 years, so I can't really claim to be a Brit apart from the passport... I don't even have an accent from anywhere in the UK!
@Sean_Aaron I have been meaning to ask you, how did you become a dual national? I always wanted to retain my british citisenship, but since i was born after 1983 my parents said some weird thing about it not being in effect, though they might be wrong. hmmm I always wanted to go back and live in the UK, that is, if i'm not able to live in Japan. Love it here
I guess it depends on your situation, the wording of the law is a bit confusing. Basically it used to be if you were born abroad you were only eligible if your father was a British citizen; in 1983 they amended the law to include children born of British mothers abroad. If you were born before 1983 you can get a British passport under that law, but you cannot pass your citizenship on to your children (they would need to be born in the UK).
It's not clear to me what your circumstance is (i.e. what citizenship you and your parents hold), but my understanding is that as long as you have a British parent you are eligible for a British passport. In my case my wife is a triple national (Canada/USA/UK) and as the spouse of a British national resident in the UK for 3 years with indefinite leave to remain I became eligible for citizenship so I applied.
As far as Japan goes you're eligible for citizenship after five years residence, though I don't know if this excludes being resident under a student visa or not; you do have to pass a Japanese proficiency exam (similarly you have to pass an English language comprehension exam when applying for UK citizenship if you're originally from a non-English speaking country like, say, America).
I'm happy to go into more detail if you like regarding UK ancestry visas, etc., though the law has changed a bit since I got "off the boat."

Okay, i doubt i will see anything funnier than this today. haha
My parents are both american, and were working in the UK when i was born, and we lived there for 2 years, at which time we moved to the states. I've pretty much been spending the last 5-7 years trying to move OUT of the states though, get out into the world. Ever since i found out about my birth certificate and all that when i was like, 5 or 6, i've followed british culture and history and been so amazed by it. I always wished i could live there. but yeah, im just a poor little undergrad. Since coming to Japan though, this is my first choice for future home, with the UK 2nd, and Canada 3rd.

Ah, well you're out of luck then. Unlike the United States, the UK (and most of the rest of the world) won't grant you citizenship just because you're born there. You'd need to officially apply to immigrate under a points system (similar to Canada's) and then be resident for five years without restriction before you could apply for naturalisation (very difficult in the current climate, since I don't know of any way you can get a work visit converted to indefinite leave to remain given the current anti-immigration feelings abounding in England, where the majority of the British population lives). You'd probably have an easier time if you hooked up with a UK citzen and got married or registered a civil partnership (the non-religious version of getting married).
@Sean_Aaron Haha, well, im flattered you asked, but since you're already married i think it would be complicated.
It seems so, and Japan isn't an easy country to get into, i mean, jobwise. You either have to be a dime-a-dozen english teacher (a job i would never take, ugh, its so icky), or something like a translator with a masters degree and years of experience...which...is actually what im going for, haha
oh well, its good to see you've settled nicely, you seem to enjoy where you live.
