Okay, but even if they are rarities, any outliers discredit a certain characteristic as a necessity to make a game a WRPG. So if there are linear WRPGs, then non-linear gameplay/story cannot be what makes a game a WRPG vs. a JRPG.
There are platformers that don't involve jumping. Does that mean that jumping is not a prime characteristic of a platformer? Just because there are exceptions to a rule does not make the rule invalid.
Mass Effect 3 is not a great example of a RPG. It borrows very heavily from other genres and that compromises its RPG vision. If you looke at something like Dragon Age or Skyrim, the player is very much in control over the direction of the plot. Heck, the main story of Skyrim is less involved than some of the side quests, and is really quite optional. Finishing Skyrim isn't really the point of it.
Every JRPG limits the control players have over the plot. Yes, there might be one or two choices to make on the way to ten different possible endings, but these are all scripted in to a linear story. WRPGs in the pure sense are player-driven, not story driven, because WRPGs come from the tabletop games like Dungeons and Dragons where the point of the game was to interact with the storyteller, not passively listen to him/her
Te WRPG in video games is actually quite rare, since it tends to be difficult in the extreme to create a game with the kind of AI and scripting that can react to a series of player choices. Skyrim, Fallout 3, Dragon Age, The Witcher 2 to a certain extent, maybe Fable 3.... And I'm out, really (aside from some obscure PC games no one cares about)
Yeah, WRPGs are really ambitious, so it's hard to find examples. It's easier to provide an enjoyable experience that is directed, so it's easier to find examples of JRPGs. Heck, most proposed WRPGs direct the experience anyway.
Best thread ever
Feel free to add me on Miiverse or PSN.
Miiverse is Moomoo14, PSN is Moomoo1405390

Yeah, this x 10000. Most WRPGs are actually JRPGs with a "Lord of the Rings-like" art style.
Really, the defining characteristic of a WRPG is whether the player has control of the plot or not. If you're playing through a story, you're playing a JRPG. If you're making a story, you're playing a WRPG.
It wasn't until I played D&D when I found out what an RPG is... or actually ment. They really should rename the current JRPG but it's already stuck.
Because now when you say, bro RPG means Role Playing Game! Then you have people saying, why isn't Donkey Kong an RPG? You are playing as Donkey Kong and not yoursel?! DERP.

Either you're making fun at me, or we're exactly the same.
No I am being serious. By the way glad I found you! How is Samurai Warriors Chronicles compared to 3? I want to give my GF my Mario Kart and get a physical game (buying all my games digital now). But I gotta keep a game in the system for dust you know? So I thought I would look for a game I can keep in my 3Ds that will give me long replay value (and a reason to keep it in the 3DS at all times).

Chronicles is still my most played 3DS game, but it's not up to the standards of 3 - less enemies on screen at once, and while the 3D looks just divine, the action feels a little too sedate thanks to the frame rate.
I still recommend it, but it's definitely a first-gen 3DS game.
I thought I heard that title was going to be a downloadable retail game, but I don't remember for sure

No guarantees it will be released in the west. Dynasty Warriors 3DS wasn't, and that's a more popular series out here.
Incidentally, you should read a book called Taiko if you're into Japanese history etc. it's a novelisation of Hideyoshi Toyotomi's life, and it is an amazIng read.
erm never really liked a wrpg unless you count xenoblade as one which i dont but some people do
No. It's not.
