Shingi, when someone says something is boring, that just means he is bored by it, not that everyone ought to be bored by it, too. Some people need points scored every other second to keep tiny attention spans awake. There are lots of reasons why someone would be bored by it, though I imagine that is the most common. Even other low-scoring games tend to be faster paced, like hockey.
I highly disagree with this. In my opinion it is a much more strategic game, and therefore even when a game is slow, is still very interesting to watch. Meanwhile, football follows the ever fluent and exciting process of getting set up for a play, performing the play(which lasts how long?), spotting the ball, repeat.
Yea, I can't stand watching football and baseball. Too much time doing nothing. Soccer has longer periods and yet the action never stops. Best of all: no commercials.
I embrace football (soccer for Americans like myself). Just that Beckham was never a moving factor in the development of the sport here. I'm actually surprised that the team is good.
Friends have said this, even Homer Simpson in The Simpsons Movie (before getting slapped): Americans will never embrace soccer. Remember, not my opinion.
If I want a fast paced sport, I can just turn on some Basketball. It is 5000000000000000000x better than soccer.
Is this supposed to make sense? Soccer is not fast paced. Why anyone would compare the two is beyond me. I guess they both feature a round ball.
I apologise. I worded that very poorly. I was just responding to another post (hope I didn't word that poorly (the previous sentence)). They both do have round balls though. Wait, if I would've never said that comment about soccer being boring, this conversation would'nt be going on. Me and my big mouth. Just ignore the user with the Daffy avatar people. Move along nothing to see here.
As for why hasn't soccer made better progress into North America, who knows? Why hasn't England dropped cricket and picked up baseball? Why hasn't American Football spread further?
Because, for whatever reason, the sports invented in England, football, tennis, rugby, cricket, etc, spread around the world, and hold dominant positions. The British Empire has a lot to do with this, of course.
American sports don't spread from North America, because, with a few exceptions (Japanese playing baseball) no-one is interested in your sports.
Go to South America they play English sports - football.
Go to Australia they play English sports - rugby.
Go to India they play English sports - cricket.
I think you sort of hit on the reason, or one of the reasons for football not catching on in the USA - the average USAatarion (as I believe people from the USA are called) can not get his head around a sport that can go on for 90 minutes and end 0-0. If it's not 48-26 he doesn't understand what's going on, and shoots someone. Probably whilst calling them a Communist.
I just think, given that the USA nation team has qualified for the biggest, greatest sporting competition in the entire world, it would be ignorant for Americans not to at least notice, and show an interest.
Oh, and if you think Americans don't play English sports, then remember that Baseball, or at least an early form of the game was brought to North America by English immigrants; and American Football evolved from the English game of Rugby.
Basketball was invented by a Canadian - and was first played with a 'soccer' ball.
I highly disagree with this. In my opinion it is a much more strategic game, and therefore even when a game is slow, is still very interesting to watch.
If you want a strategic game, just play cricket. You dont get much more strategic than a game which lasts 5 days.
It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!
Trin, I know you're proud of your country and all, but England didn't invent football, they just codified the rules that ended up being most widespread. No one knows exactly when or where the game started. I've actually heard guesses as far from England as China, and it was known to be played throughout medieval Europe.
Stevie, not that that guy isn't talented, but when you've seen someone do almost everything that guy did except with a tiny footbag, it's not really impressive to see this.

Haha.
Of course English people didn't invent moving your foot rapidly towards an object, thus making it move, nor the concept of this being a sport. The fact remains, however, that the sport of Association Football was codified, invented, call it what you will, in England. Me being or not being proud of my country makes no difference to this fact.
Yea, and I'm sure it made all those countries' days when their cultural sports were replaced by their imperial masters'. And that's just two countries anyway, India and Australia. Soccer is not an English sport, just codified there. All that means is they wrote down the official rules. It was played mostly the same way elsewhere before it arrived to England.
I just think, given that the USA nation team has qualified for the biggest, greatest sporting competition in the entire world, it would be ignorant for Americans not to at least notice, and show an interest.

How is it ignorant? I don't even notice when the world series or super bowl is, despite most of the country being excited about it. Am I ignorant for that? No, I simply don't like those sports and don't care.
Stevie, not that that guy isn't talented, but when you've seen someone do almost everything that guy did except with a tiny footbag, it's not really impressive to see this.
Yeah, but a footbag won't roll off your foot/shoulder/head/whatever, which makes things a lot easier. Now, doing a bit of this with a tennis ball or even a ping-pong ball, now that's clever.
As for the World Cup, I wouldn't be surprised to see the US topping the group. England has a tendency to be complacent about the prowess of its football team, especially so against "weaker" teams, and I think there's a basic error being made about the US team; just because the nation doesn't care much for the sport, it doesn't mean that the team itself isn't any good. Just remember, they beat Portugal a few years back, and beat Spain recently, both teams tipped to do well in 2010. And last time they faced England in the World Cup, they won.

If you don't notice as an individual, fair enough, if your country doesn't notice, that's ignorance.
