Hey all, this is my first new topic and hope it isn't my last!

I was watching the latest episode of Kaizoku Sentai Gokai (Pirate Team Gokaiger), which is the latest in the Japanese series that Power Rangers comes from and was suprised to see the "Greatest Treasure in the Universe" that they've been chasing for the last 48 episodes is, well, take a look for yourself (in bottom right picture)!

Is it me, or have the Power Rangers simply robbed Link to save time?

Considering that the picture shows just about every other red ranger in existence (as well as a few that must be from iterations before Saban started localizing them) I would say that the rangers have just found their "link to the past."

Seriously though, is that a pirate symbol on the new guy's helmet? I thought they were the good guys, not some two-bit thieves in colorful pajamas!

WHY did I not thing of that Link to the Past reference??

Actually this is the 40th anniversary series of Sentai & this time the heroes are Space Pirates... their special ability is to use "Ranger Keys" to transform into Power Rangers from previous series. It's pretty cool when you realise that the yellow Mighty Morphin' ranger was actually a man... or that the White Ranger was from a different series to the rest & was stiched in at editing.

As for being "two-bit", the action in the latest episode was quite hardcore. Wouldn't see one of the repeat cast die in the localized versions. lol

I wasn't trying to criticise the show at all; I used to be a huge fan of the localized versions. I was just making a joke from the thought of pirates dressed in brightly colored reflective uniforms. I do find some of the differences in our localized versions, like the original white ranger you mentioned, really interesting. I do want to point out that, if I'm not mistaken, the white ranger wasn't edited in; the fight scenes in seasons 2 and 3 were filmed primarily with the American actors. Scenes of him alone (in the Tigerzord for instance) were probably recycled from the Japanese show. This is why when the show's cast changed, the rangers looked different (the second red was slimmer than the original, second yellow shorter than the first, ect). It also explains the white ranger's apparent split personality; in shots where he is with the others he behaves relatively calm compared to when he is alone where he tends to act a bit crazy.

No, I didn't think you were criticizing the show so no worries! ;D

But yes, I do know there was a good amount of original content from the American version but I love the fact that they used lots of different shows just to make one coherent story (much like Robotech). For example the Alien Rangers were from a series called Kokuranger, the Mighty Morphin Rangers were from Zyuranger... yet the Thunderzords were from Dairanger (the same series as the White Ranger).

I really do advise watching some of the Japanese episodes as they're much more suited to older viewers.

I may try to check it out sometime. I used to be a huge fan of MMPR, and watched the show regularly until the ending of in Space, although I wasn't quite as fond of Zeo, Turbo, or in Space. I really liked how they blended several generations of the Japanese show together because, you said, it did make the story a bit more cohesive and it made it a bit more believable as well. I could actually believe that Tommy was the white ranger, because in many scenes the actor really was behind the helmet. I think that is part of the reason I started loosing interest after Zeo started; it was too obvious that Jason David Frank (the actor who played Tommy, don't ask how I remembered his name) and the other actors weren't actually in the ranger suits any more and that kinda ruined the illusion for my 7 year old self.

But all the red rangers are coming back!..again! So, awesome!

I think this only applies to the Japanese Super Sentai series. The American Power Rangers shows have completely different plots, actors, and settings.

I thought the Power Rangers shows were basically American remakes of the Super Sentai series? The actors, plots, and setting are all completely different between the two.

Do they still use stock-footage of the Japanese show? Or is it all filmed in America now?

Yeah, but the suits are usually the same. As you can see in the picture. Seeing as the current series in the west right now are samurais maybe we won't see the pirate thing. I'd honestly love to see how people react to it though.

The plots were/are pretty much completely different, but most of the battle scene footage where they have their suits are pulled directly from their Japanese counter parts. They then dub in dialog from the English actors. They've been like that pretty much since the end of Mighty Morphin'.

Funnily enough, the last I heard none of the show was filmed in America any more; if I remember right, the parts where you can see the actors' faces are filmed in New Zealand and the rest is pulled from the Japanese show. Granted, I think this was from when Disney was in control of the show, I don't know if things may have changed now that Saban is in control again.

You're right, most of the sans-mask content is filmed in New Zealand now, though Saban have actually started adding more NEW content to the shows - Power Rangers Samurai (the butchering of my favourite Samurai Sentai Shinkenger) uses completely different suits when they fight in their Zords... and as of next season they will get brand new "shogun armour". It's a shame none of the PR:S guys can act otherwise it's wouldn't be that bad.

@Retro, to be honest, I didn't think Power Rangers would use Samurai due to all the Kanji (it's even on their faces!) and the deep adherence to the feudal code. If they can get away with that, they can get away with Gokaigers (pirates).

EDIT: thinking about it, Gokaigers uses every Sentai in history especially Deka Ranger (SPD), Magi Ranger (Magic Force) & Gao Ranger (Wild Force) and Shinkenger (Samurai)... hoe could they STOP Saban taking it???
