@Ryno
Wow, Bloodlines was kinda low on your list but each to his own. Am I the only one that is itching to play some new Castlevania games? With Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate coming up soon, I hope it can deliver.
In no way do I think Bloodlines is Bad Dudes bad. It's just a little low on an extremely impressive list of an overall vampire killer series. I just prefer to battle in and around Drac's crib during one of his halloween gothic style raves as opposed to traveling around the world in 80 days you know?
To blessed to be stressed.
80's music makes me feel fabulous.

Well I have to say I am still enjoying Portrait of Ruin. Finally got pass the first boss (Yeah I know I am slow but I am bouncing between this and Warioland) which can be a p.i.t.a. if you use the wrong character. Still I can now see why this game was so hard to find. As good as Dawn of Sorrows was this game is better.

so .... since i have nothing left on the 3Ds to play, im atm hyped for the castlevania 3D : mirror of fate.
mostly reading forums now ( guess which one and watching vids on youtube. Lord of shadow looked crazy - dont have ps3 though -
Ok so no pc game to play and no Wii / 3Ds . Well whats left to do if nothing on horizon in future ? You guessed right lets sink teeth into retro bliss
I just finished dracula X on the snes and am actually confused that there are a total of 3 castlevanias for the snes. And i heared Rondo of blood is THE definite retro castlevania so maybe i will give it a shot on the Wii, will see how many points it will cost ...
Until then i found that epic castlevania fans vid:
Oh and i salute that japanese fan who did all the guitar chords himself it seems , very good compilation of reminiscent cv medleys !!!
so either u can listen to it with closed eyes and guess where what song is first played in what castlevania installement. Or look at the screenshots and bath in castlevania nostalgia. Ofc i dont know all installements but maybe after time i will catch up with all. So far i only know castlevania 4 , dracula x , circle of the moon and dawn of sorrow. Yes i knew very little collection, but well time to get hands on more
Now finished on listening to the 1:22 hour epicness and going back to castlevania 4 .....
on to do list is cv 1 , rondo of blood and future mirror of fate
Update I I now bought Rondo of Blood and have to say of now its the most awesome classic castlevania i have played. Rondo totally annihilated super castlevania4.
Finished also portrait of ruin , order of ecclesia and have to say both are enjoyment. So i like both and classical. But i think order of ecclesia is best castlevania until 2012. Why you may ask ? Because it feels like best fusion between classic and metroidvania. And the dual wield fight mechanic is just so awesome
Update 2 with spoiler Its just awesome that u can fight vs richter and play him in porait of ruin. Thats really nostalgic

did you mean nes? theres only two games for snes...

no no , back than i really thought the glorious SNes had 3 different castlevanias.
But i figured yes the rondo of blood is no snes title, but a superior turbografix / pc engime game.
Sorry for the fault. But as those 16-bit gems go i would rate them. Rondo > DraculaX > super castlevania4
I dont understand the hype over super castlevania. The final boss battle in super castlevania4 was the most dull and unimaginative fight i've ever seen in any castlevania game.
correction ca2 or simons quest is supposed to be pretty bad
#I heared the Nes ca3 is supposed to be pretty bad#. I didnt try any of the NES installement. Not sure about the graphic style and i could go so retro hardcore
Sure the challenge should be handable but the graphics style is a bit weird. Eye cancer anyone?
cheers
PS: i started my castlevania legacy with the first game on GB ( adventure), and back then i never was able to finish it. Couple of years ago i did finish it and i found it quite enjoyable. Dont understand all the hate for the GB castlevanias. Sure legends was inferior to adventure, but well thats most old school u can get hehe.
Actually, aside from an insane difficulty, Castlevania 3 is quite well regarded. Castlevania 2 on the other hand....
wait a minute castlevania 2 for nes was simons quest ?
oh yes i meant two and not three -.-
yes i heared the grinding in simons quest is awful. And while playing portrait of ruin now i know what they mean
Grinding is really a bad game design choice.
So yeah u see i have not much clue about the NES games. Simons quest seems not very appealing with the muddy graphics. Castlevania 1 on the other side seems like a bad turkey trip. So not sure if i will ever play one of those nes games.
a real vampire hunter will pay full price and not wait for a price drop...
what a terrible night to have a discount

So like Dracula I have decided it's time this thread is risen from its slumber.
I recently picked up Rondo of Blood on the Wii VC and I have to say what terrific game!!! I am not a big fan of classicvania games I tried playing them but I just get frustrated with them and end up burning them at the stake. I love the storyline of them so I rather just watch someone else play them. The only one I really liked was Bloodlines on the Genesis.
Anyway since Symphony of the Night is my favorite and after watching a James and Mike Monday episode featuring Rondo of Blood and being in a major Castlevania mood, I figured what the hell and bought it. And I will say I am quite enjoying it. Not sure what it is but this game doesn't feel as difficult as the other classicvania games and I love the minor bits of exploration in it like finding Maria. It almost feels a bit like a blend between classicvania and Metroidvania styles of Castlevania which makes sense in an odd sort of way since this was the last classicvania style game before they went Metroidvania. The music is great the level designs are great and the controls just feel right a bit easier to control Richter then Simon or Trevor. As of now I am only in level 4 but I can't wait to play more and hopefully beat this game. My only gripe is that it's not translated
Still though it's an awesome game.

Well, this thread returned after a very long time. And I haven't been in a Castlevania discussion for quite some time.
As for preference, Dawn of Sorrow is my favourite modern Castlevania (closely followed by Order of Ecclesia and Circle of the Moon), with Bloodlines being my favourite classic one, and the only classic one I really enjoyed overall.
Worst Castlevania's to me would be Castlevania 64 (easy target, I know) and Adventures.
But since I'm here: does anyone here have a 3D Castlevania game they like? Of course Castlevania's biggest feats of glory lie on the X and Y axis, but I thought some 3D ones weren't all that bad.
@Kaze_Memaryu: As awesome as DoS was, I actually liked Portrait of Ruin a bit more. I like how they went back to the two character play kinda like Bloodlines and the fact that it was a sequel to Bloodlines. I have never played OoE though as by the time that came out I was a bit burnt on Castlevania games. I guess once I finish Rondo, I might look into that one.

@Kaze_Memaryu: I love Dawn of Sorrow. The castle design is brilliant! One aspect of the game that really shines for me is the music. Order of Ecclesia is a very close second. I enjoyed the smaller levels and liked the protagonist. The weapon system was good. I did enjoy Portrait of Ruin but it didn't quite gel so much with me. Overall favourite is still Symphony of the Night.
@Tasuki: OoE is a brilliant game. A bittersweet swansong for the 2D series. I thought it was much harder than the other DS entries!
Dawn of Sorrow is my favourite modern Castlevania (closely followed by Order of Ecclesia and Circle of the Moon)
I will agree with you all day on DoS being the overall best, but I really think that Portrait Of Ruin outshines Ecclesia and Circle. Once you unlock the best weapon and start using it in conjunction with Jonathan's tactical moveset you really do start to feel like a legendary Vampire Killer. Some of the best gaming highs I've ever had were in making my way from one portrait to the next, vaulting and crushing my enemies in that castle like they barely even existed.
