Those PSVita trailers above, as good as some of them look, aren't that much different to what the iPad can (and does) handle.
I agree with you in the capability. The iPad and newer iPhones could handle games very similar to that of the Vita as far as power and graphic capabilities go. If Apple were to go into expandable memory (easier then to store 1+ gig games, but then again, Apple has plenty of legitimate reasons for it to avoid this) and larger and better studios began to invest more heavily (Real Racing 2/Infinity Blade/Groove Coaster level of fully fledged polish), then iOS would be golden. Until then, I still want a Vita (or one of those miraculously cheap 3DS systems). And I have to say, LittleBigPlanet and Gravity Rush look absolutely great.

I completely disagree. There is very little on the App Store that appeals to me. Don't have much to play now. ._.
What genres do you like playing? Aside from FPSers I can recommend you plenty of games in each.
I've been trying many games and have deleted a lot. The iPad does do strategy, simulation, and puzzle games well, but for other genres can't find anything that doesn't control like crap.
I can't see how people don't think that LittleBigPlanet trailer looks awesome.
Maybe it's because certain people find the LBP games to be terrible...
And this. The customization is excellent, but I played LBP a little while back on PS3 and found the gameplay just slow and boring... (This is coming from a guy who loves platformers.)
Hey c'mon, I like Gameloft's FPS controls more than the Wii's.
Wow are you serious? Tried NOVA and Modern Combat and hated the controls.

It also does RPGs very well, and some puzzle platformers (NyxQuest, Sam and the Magic Marker) play better on the iPad than Wii.
There's also some reasonable sports and racing games on it. Of the more niche genres, the iPad is better than anything else with board games and has the best music game in a generation (Groove Coaster).
It just doesn't do so well with heavy action games and FPSers.
@waltz: I hate RPG's so that doesn't matter to me. But I loved NyxQuest on Wii. Downloading the Lite version right now. I'm gonna look into Groove Coaster later. And I agree with you about the board games. Scrabble on the iPad is awesome.

If Sony and Nintendo want to keep their numbers in the portable market, they're gonna have to make sure they keep a steady flow of great and exclusive gaming content on their systems. Amazing games that you just can't play anywhere else. Simple as that. That's what will make people want to buy the system and stick with it.
So far the Vita is looking amazing and the game content is equally impressive. Let's just hope it continues to flow steadily once the system is released.

To be honest I'm getting a Vita for the back catalogue and the Japanese games. I'm not as interested in the stuff that's been announced for the west yet.
I just finished the first level and I'm gonna stick to the Wii version. I was uncomfortable multitasking. Moving blocks while trying to move and jump is a pain for me, and I can imagine how uncomfortable I'll be playing in the later levels where there is a lot of multitasking. And walking one way and trying to switch in the other direction quickly doesn't always work. I prefer the The wii remote and nunchuck so I guess we will agree to disagree. And btw thanks for the suggestions. I'll be sure to look into those.

I didn't experience any of what you're talking about (much less in the first level), but ok.
I just prefer buttons and analog sticks. Could be me not used to touch controls but whatever. Now back to the topic... Yeah Reality Fighters looks awesome. Gonna look up some more info on that.

iPad = $500 Handheld = $250 or less
iPad = touchscreen and gyro Handheld = touchscreen, gyro, buttons
I prefer handhelds cause I can't stand simulated buttons on a touchscreen. There is no tactile feeling. Simple games that use basic touch controls like swiping, poking, dragging, etc. are fine. I like Angry Birds, Infinity Blade, Cut the Rope, etc. But I tried playing Devil May Cry and Dead Space on my iPod... No thanks. Real buttons and analog sticks are easier for me to use. Have you ever tried using a simulated analog stick on a touchscreen device?
And one last thing. I am NOT paying $500 for a device just to play games. I know they say it's an investment, but I'm not swayed. The most I'll spend for a gaming device is $300 (for a PS3).
iPad games (not including the casual games. We're talking the full gaming experience games): $7-8 through to $20-$25 Handheld games (assuming you're buying them at a reasonable price, and I've never seen a DS/ Wii owner only buy games second hand or on sale. Everyone has a few full priced games in their collection): $20-$60
Prices are in Australian, but they roughly scale wherever you are.
So, just by doing a little math: Worst case scenario, after 20 games, your iPad works out cheaper overall. It's possible the iPad ends up being cheaper after just five games.

I'm pretty sure I said earlier in the thread that the iPad doesn't do action games that well, thanks to those pesky virtual buttons. But then there's 10 other genres where virtual buttons either aren't a problem (with all of a hours practice) or are, if anything, a benefit. Board games, for instance, do better on the iPad than DS/ PSP.

Just as well the iPad does plenty more than games then, isn't it? I've yet to run into someone who hasn't found the device incredibly useful on a number of fronts.
It's interesting that you decided to end your comparison there, though, since it conveniently fails to take into account where the iPad is a superior device to the traditional consoles.
1) It has a better range of games, and a lot more games.
No, I'm not talking about casual games. I'm talking about actual, really real games. The kind that people who don't have iPads like to stick their heads in the sand and pretend don't exist.
2) The screen quality is better, and bigger.
Did you know that you can use your iPad as the actual board in Monopoly? Where people sit around it? Try and do that with the other handhelds. The iPad screen is big, and HD. It's also multitouch, which is something the DS/ 3DS lacks. This leads to some superb gaming opportunities.
There's more, but I'm not really interested in making a comparison of it. I'm also not saying that anyone needs to buy one. It's no more 'essential' than any other gaming device.
The iPad is, however, too easily dismissed for a bunch of ridiculous reasons by people that haven't even played one. The fact that people still insist that Angry Birds is all that's on it is case in point.
If you are going to dismiss the iPad, then do yourself a favour and do it for a real reason. Otherwise you owe it to yourself to at least look at it, because the device IS capable of experiences as interesting as any of those Vita trailer games in the first post of this here thread, and anything on the Nintendo 3DS.
