According to Wikileaks, it wasn't just Super Mario that Sony was interested in for a movie, but even Super Smash Bros.! This is going by a series of emails just like with the proposed Mario movie. It could have even been a series.

I wouldn't have minded a Super Smash Bros movie in the vein of Subspace Emissary. Subspace Emissary wasn't great as a gaming medium but as a dedicated movie I can see the idea working.
