2. Persona 3 FES, any Dragon Quest game, Final Fantasy IV, Okage (very few people know about it!), Pokemon G/S, Earthbound, Final Fantasy Tactics A2
3. Shin Megami Tensei, Rune Factory 3, Pokemon White, Mount and Blade, and Paper Mario 3 once it comes out
4. RPGs include a lot of things that other genres can't. Compelling moments and storylines, relatable characters, gameplay that requires more strategy and problem solving then reflex, an addictive soundtrack, long length, etc.
5. Hate to sound like I have nostalgia goggles screwed to my head, but RPGs just aren't what they used to be. The 90's and early 2000's were their golden years. With that being said, I still love them and hope to see them prosper as they once did. Also, I rarely consider MMORPGs as true RPGs.
Talk about irony <_<
JRPGs are not "true" RPGs, either. I could give you the whole history lesson if you're ready to be bored to sleep, but the short of it: JRPGs have evolved to be a completely different genre to pen and paper RPGs like Dungeons and Dragons, which are the real RPGs.
Western RPGs are a closer approximation of "true" RPGs, though technically a video game will never be able to offer the true sandbox experience - which is ultimately what an RPG really is.
Save your history lesson. It's just that MMOs are so different from regular RPGs, that I can hardly consider them in the same group as each other. They don't normally contain what I had mentioned, and are generally unrewarding experiences. If you want to go around telling people that "MapleStory is a good RPG with good gameplay, sound, and a gripping story", then that's fine by me. I don't care what people think is a RPG or not, it's just I can't feel much of a connection that a MMORPG has to the roleplaying genre.
You do realise that MMOs are closer to real RPGs than JRPGs, right? JRPGs have a closer connection with adventure games, if you break it down.
The problem with MMOs is more the community than anything else. The bigger MMOs, like World of Warcraft, with dedicated Role Playing servers, they're as close to a real RPG that you get in video game form. I mean, one of the main tennants of a RPG is the player makes the story. There's not a single JRPG that offers that.

There's one thing I forgot to mention in my post.
We aren't talking about tabletop RPGs.
These are video game RPGs, much different from tabletops. So there's really no buisness talking about them in a thread centered around video game RPG. I do enjoy tabletop RPGs a lot, but the fact is you're comparing apples and oranges. They are two completely different experiences.
You're correct. They are two different experiences entirely. But to use your analogy: Say the Apple (tabletop RPG) was around first. People loved it, and many apples were eaten. No one knew what an Orange (cRPG, of which JRPG is one type of Orange) was, because it hadn't been 'invented' yet.
But then the Orange was 'invented.' Only, no one knew what an Orange was, so they decided to call it an Apple so it would sell better.
Now all of a sudden you have to very different things, both called 'Apple.' But they're not the same thing, so which is the real Apple, and which isn't an Apple at all?
To bring that slightly insane analogy back to topic - RPGs, as in Table Top RPGs are the definition of RPG. cRPGs are not actually RPGs at all. Not that they're bad games by any means - 80% of my gaming time is on cRPGs, but if you're going to dismiss MMOs as "not real RPGs," then you really should be aware that Final Fantasy, Pokemon, Elder Scrolls and Dragon Quest are all oranges as well. The closest to Apple flavour the Oranges have come so far is, ironically enough given your dismissal of them, MMOs, because they share the most in common with the real Apples.
(It gets really weird when you think of Dungeons and Dragons video games. They're Oranges that wear Apple suits to work...)
... I'm going to stop drinking now. I hope that made some kind of demented sense.
What got me into RPGs? Free Dragon Warrior. What are your favorite RPGs? Hmm...Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, assorted non-cinematic JRPGs. What RPGs am I into right now? Dragon Quest IX, Symphony of Eternity, Illusia, Find Mii... What do I like most about RPGs? Story, Battle, Grind What other RPG-related things can I think of? JRPG = Japanese-style RPG there's nothing bad or racist about it. JRPG JRPG JRPG!
What is the meaning of life? That's so easy, the answer is TETRIS.
@WaltzElf Better to have LARPed and lost than never to have LARPed at all. Uh, maybe.
@feder Man, Threads of Fate is one of those Squaresoft PSX-era treasures that I never found anywhere. I really want to play it though. It looks like one heck of a loopy time.
Interviewer: What got you into RPGs? Jango-Forest: Hmm...originally the Pokemon games, specifically Ruby. In terms of more RPG-ish RPGs then I would say Final Fantasy III
Int: What are your favorite RPGs? JF: The Paper Mario series and Dragon Quest
Int: What RPG(s) are you into right now? JF: Dragon Quest and Golden Sun
Int: What do you like most about RPGs? JF: The exploration I guess, wandering around new towns is what I look forward to most. And plot. It's got to have a good plot.
Int: What other RPG-related things can you think of? JF: Um...ah, good question, I'm stumped! (both laugh) I suppose one thing I would say is that I prefer RPGs that don't have random battling in them. Which is why I love games such as Chrono Trigger and Paper Mario: TTYD. The only games that do random battling right, in my opinion are the various Golden Suns.
Int: Thanks for your time. JF: No problem, it was my pleasure.
Sorry, should have been more clear. Just the series in general
And @WaltzElf, your analogy does make sense. I probably should have just kept the MMO comment to myself. Also, I lol'd hard at the Dungeons and Dragons comment.
Waltz won before posting. Because you used the term "true RPGs". Not as bad as "TRUE FANS" but still that is never a good idea.
Ahem. MY consideration of what a true RPG is. Believe me when I say I hate all that true fan BS too.
Also, I like how you said he won before posting. As if, you know, I meant to start an argument with my comment. I was just sharing an opinion and he respectfully displayed a different one, so there was no "winner".
@Mickeymac true, but I really wasn't looking to start an argument. But I kind of did. I'm kinda bad at that ^^;;
Anyway, back to your question on SMT, right now my interest belongs to Devil Survivor, but like I said, I really just want to see more of the series as a whole, so I'm looking forward to being able to play other installments.
Devil Survivor's a good one. I like how they meld together standard Turn-based JRPG combat with a strategy game. The story and characters were pretty good, too. One of the few strategy games with a story I liked.
