1) The Mario RPG's. 2) All the Mario RPG's except Superstar Saga (haven't played it yet), Chrono Trigger and Shining Force. 3) Chrono Trigger and Ys Book I & II. 4) Not really sure. Not a huge fan of RPG's but there's just something about the ones I've played that make me like them. 5) Can't think of anything at the moment.

What got you into RPGs? For Video game RPGs a friend of mine rented Final Fantasy II (IV) back during the SNES era. before that I only played Dragon Warrior cause of a free copy I got from Nintendo. Anyway I fell in love with Final Fantasy II cause of the storyline and the battle scenes and after playing it for a few hours over at his house I had to go out and buy it for myself. As for tabletop RPGs a friend of mine introduces me to 2nd Edition Dungeons and Dragons and I was hooked ever since. For MMORPGS I was introduce to that genre because of Dungeon and Dragons Online due to the fact that I have been playing D&D for years and I just didnt have the time to play tabletop anymore so I thought this would cure the craving (instead it just created a new one for MMOs lol).
What are your favorite RPGs? So many but some of them are: Final Fantasy 3 (6), Final Fantasy 2 (4), Chrono Trigger, Pokemon White, Suikoden, Legend of Dragoon, World of Warcraft
What RPG(s) are you into now? Right now Pokemon White, World of Warcraft, and Chrono Trigger.
What do you like most about RPGs? The deep storylines that RPGs have they dont just stop at the characters and whats going on but alot of them go into deep backgrounds of the world around you which I really like.
What other RPG related things can you think of? None at this moment.
RetiredPush Square Moderator and all around retro gamer.
1) I got into RPGs through Kingdom Hearts and various other action-RPGs.
2) Final Fantasy, Shin Megami Tensei, the Tales Series, and various smaller series such as Summon Night and The Dark Spire.
3) Right now I'm into the Tales series. I just finished off Tales of Vesperia, and now I'll be playing Tales of Destiny and Tales of the Abyss.
4) That's a tough question. I suppose there isn't one thing in particular I like about them. It really depends on the game, as I'm always looking for their strongest elements.
5) Uhm, I'm suppose I should mention that I prefer Japanese RPGs to Western RPGs.
I was never into RPG's until I played Mario RPG. I used to think they were too complicated and confusing. Then one day back in 1996 I decided to try out this odd experiment that merged Mario with RPG elements. After that my whole outlook was changed. Mario somehow made the Genre fun and exciting to me.
My top favorites of all time are as follows. 1. Mario RPG. For making me a fan of the Genre. 2. Chrono Trigger All kinds of Awesome! Need I say more? 3. Earthbound and Mother 3 Two of the sweetest games ever made. 4. Ys Book 1 and 2 Thank you VC for letting me experience this Gem! 5. Secret of Mana. Another great one!
The thing I like most about RPG's is that it's like reading a good book. When the story is so engaging and heartfelt it's hard to put down. You get drawn into the world and you actually care about the characters. It's very satisfying when you finally reach the end of your quest and save the fate of the land.

1. Chrono Trigger DS 2010. I had dipped my toes in to RPGs before with games like Pokemon, but I could never get into traditional RPGs until this game. 2. Top 5 2a (1) . Dragon Quest V 2b (2). Chrono Trigger 2c (3). Pokemon Sapphire 2d (4). Dragon Quest IX 2e (5). Pokemon Black 3. None at the moment 4. They are fun, long, and the music usually rocks 5. I like Japanese style RPGs mainly because I have only played Japanese style RPGs. I may played one or two western RPGs but I am not sure.
Formally Square-enixFan, Neo-GeoFan. A lover of fine games and handheld systems!!!!!!!!!! The New 3DS XL is amazing, soon the NX will be upon us! Backloggery Check my Youtube channel out! http://www.youtube.com/user/Ha...
1) While I played the original Dragon Warrior before, it wasn't until Final Fantasy that I started getting hooked to the genre.
2) Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts, Chrono Trigger, Mother/Earthbound, Star Ocean, so mostly Square and Enix games I suppose.
3) Right now I'm playing through Sonic Chronicles, I'm not really a huge fan of Bioware or most western RPG's to be honest, however I still like to give them a try and I didn't mind Elder Scrolls IV besides the "leveling problem."
4) I can't really say, I like each series of games for different reasons.
5) I actually hate using the term JRPG, don't know where it came from and honestly just sounds racist, yet everyone uses it.

I've always been an avid reader of anything with an amazing story. I've also been a gamer since I first stumbled upon the NES in my parents room in 1993. Combine the two and you have the most amazing thing to ever be synthesized since peanut butter and chocolate became Reese's.
What are your favorite RPGs?
I began with the action-adventure RPGs such as TLoZ and Secret of Mana. Then I began to delve into turn-based RPGs with deeper storylines, like the Final Fantasy series. Games like Chrono Trigger and FFIV are my favorite retro RPGs. My favorite modern RPGs are Final Fantasy X (Amazing, engrossing storyline), the Dark Cloud series (innovative and equally engrossing), Rogue Galaxy (Level-5 knows what they're doing), and at least one hundred titles for the DS (exaggeration, but not by much).
What RPG(s) are you into right now?
FF:TFHoL and DQIX are absorbing most of my time. I've also played through Chrono Trigger on my DS at least twice since January.
What do you like most about RPGs?
The emotions evoked through amazing storylines are my favorite part of playing RPGs. I absolutely love to feel and care about the game. I also love to grind and micromanage, which are common features of RPGs.
What got you into RPGS? Final Fantasy (NES), Breathe of Fire (SNES), Chrono Trigger (SNES) What are your favorite RPGs? 5) Orcs & Elves (DS) 4) Golden Sun (GBA) 3) Final Fantasy Tactics (PSX) 2) Chrono Trigger (DS) 1) Legend of Legaia (PSX) What RPG(s) are you into right now? World of Warcraft is the only real RPG I'm playing right now. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night only has RPG elements, but that's the closest aside from WoW. What do you like most about RPGs? The constant improvements of your character, and the collecting. What other RPG-related things can you think of? Well, I've noticed that during the seventh generation of consoles, I stopped playing JRPGs thanks to the rise of WRPGs and the better attention to exploration and forging your own path, your own story really gave a truer sense of what an RPG is meant to be (Considering it's all based of Dungeons & Dragons, where anything is possible and nothing can be expected.). It's not that I don't play JRPGs, but I find I hate the art style they've been using in their games, hate the voice acting, and have been spoiled by western cinematics (Namely Blizzard), so watching the Eastern-style cutscenes look flawed. I went 8 years without buying a single JRPG because of this. The game to break that streak was Golden Sun: Dark Dawn, which was an overlooked masterpiece.
Bedloggery Currently playing Pokemon Black (DS) Amnesia: The Dark Descent (OnLive) Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (XBLA)
What got you into RPGs? First RPG ever was Albert Odyssey (SAT). Man that was an awesome game. Then I was hooked by Shining the Holy Ark (SAT), Panzer Dragoon Saga (SAT) and Final Fantasy VII (PC) and never looked back.
What are your favorite RPGs? JRPGs: Suikoden II, FInal Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy IX, Vagrant Story, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Persona 3 FES, Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2, Tales of Eternia, Chrono Cross, Grandia, Lunar 2: Eternal Blue. Strategy RPGs: Dragon Force, Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis, Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem. WRPGS: Baldur's Gate II, Fallout 1 & 2, Dragon Age: Origins, Diablo 2. MMORPGs: Ragnarok Online, Guild Wars.
What RPG(s) are you into right now? DDS2, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. Ragnarok Online just went free to play so I'm thinking of getting back into that too.
What do you like most about RPGs? For JRPGs, the stories and pretty spell graphics. For WRPGs, multilinear stories and complex character progression.
What other RPG-related things can you think of? Unlike many, I really enjoyed FFXII - but only after I saw it as a spiritual successor to Vagrant Story. RPGs I haven't played but managed to get my hands on recently: Parasite Eve I & II, Xenogears, Suikoden I, Persona 2 IS and EP. I'm highly anticipating Torchlight 2, Guild Wars 2 and Diablo III.
What got you into RPGs? Donald Duck->Kingdom Hearts->Final Fantasy->(J)RPGs
What are your favorite RPGs? Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts BBS, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Final Fantasy in general, Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, Paper Mario: TTYD, TWEWY, Tales of Symphonia, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, Demon's Souls, Persona 3: FES, Persona 4, Ys Seven, Odin Sphere, Golden Sun: The Lost Age.
What RPG(s) are you into right now? Ys.
What do you like most about RPGs? Dunno, the story? RPGs also generally have more beautiful/awesome soundtracks, imo.
What other RPG-related things can you think of? I have a thing for action RPGs. Also I much prefer the linear story and character development in JRPGs, as opposed to that in WRPGs. In WRPGs there's too many choices and endings and stuff, and in my opinion it comes as no surprise that it took a Japanese developer to make a western style RPG I actually enjoyed (Demon's Souls). I do however love Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines. Also, genres I generally don't like too much I find much more enjoyable with the insertion of RPG elements. FPS games, for instance.

Earthbound. First RPG and instantly fell in love with. What are your favorite RPGs? Dark Cloud 2, FFCC, Dragon Quest, Mario RPGS (M&L and Paper Mario), Guild Wars, Pokémon, Atlus RPGs, Zelda
What RPG(s) are you into right now? Pokemon, Crystal Chronicles and Dragon Quest
What do you like most about RPGs? Compelling stories, though, I get bored if there is no humor or it takes itself too seriously (certain Final Fantasy titles). And they are lengthy and the most enjoyable games around.
What other RPG-related things can you think of? I enjoy action-RPGs and games that mix it up (Super Paper Mario for example). I also love games such as Crystal Chronicles where 4-players can join in and play. I'm not a huge fan of MMORPGs, but for some reason, I dig Guild Wars. For some reason, I feel it's completely different from the other MMOs. I like how fast paced and responsive the game is. I'm so looking forward to Guild Wars 2.
Looking at the games you've played, I can see why you think the music usually rocks. It's not often true, unfortunately. I suggest looking out for games with good music, maybe even pay attention to the composers and whatnot.
It's not racist. Japanese and Western RPGs honestly do have distict and completely different styles, and with very few exceptions, the two rarely cross. They used to call them Console RPGs, but now Western RPGs are also appearing on consoles. It's the only way to differentiate the two.
You might like the Shin Megami Tensei games. They got mad good stories, and the gameplay makes you think, too. Also, it's nice to see another fan of Rogue Galaxy.
I'm like, the exact opposite. I love exploring, but it's optional for me. I hate writing up my own stories (though I come up with stories all the time...), and even then, I find video games to be a horrible way for me to express those stories. I tried it myself, and it just didn't work out. I prefer listening to the stories of others, a solid story with characters I care about. I find JRPGs are best at telling those stories. Also, I'm an anime nut, so the art styles work great for me. I hate most western art styles, too.
Oh, and you remended me that I need to play Breath of Fire. And I hope Legend of Legaia comes to PSN someday.
I played the SNES Albert Odyssey, it was a lot of fun, but all in Japanese. I really should try out the Saturn one since that got translated.
Also, your list of favorites almost made me cry it was so beautiful - nearly every game on there was either a favorite of mine, or a game that I really really really want to play.
Good to see another fan of Kingdom Hearts, Tales of Symphonia, Persona 3, and Odin Sphere. Also, I too am interested in Demon's Souls, despite my general dislike for western-style RPGs.
@Mickeymac: I like how they go into the characters background as well, but I also like how the go into dept with the world as well. I also find myself at least being drawn to the story of an RPG more so than the story of an platform game for example. Which is why RPGs are my favorite genre of video games, and I too dont believe that Zelda games are RPGs it annoys me when people say so otherwise.
