So, I just got a new flatscreen from my friend. It's awesome and all, but there seems to be something wrong. If something bright (like an explosion) appears on screen, even for just a second, anything that was originally dark in the game will be twice as dark until I pause or hit the home button. It's not just the Wii, because I tested it on the 360, Gamecube and N64. All of them do it. And it's not the games because my old TV never did this. It's not too bad for games like Metroid Prime or Ocarina of Time, but in other games like Dead Rising or Left 4 Dead, it gets too dark to even see. I resorted to turning my brightness up to 60, but now anything that was originally bright is too bright and hurts my eyes. It's not a dire problem, but it's really irritating. Any idea why this could be happening or how I could fix it?

I'm just gonna throw out the obvious and sarcastic: get a new TV.

On a serious note, if it's truly new (not like new as in "new to you" but like you pulled it out of the box new), try seeing if there's a warranty on it. If not, try the troubleshooting part of the manual (if you still have it) and if there's nothing about that in there maybe have Geek Squad or someone else take a look at it. Or see if your friend will sell you back the TV. That's at least what I'd do, anyway.

Exactly.

I think it's fixed now. I spent some time fiddling with the cords and settings (which are pretty limited on the TV. Basically just picture and sound), tried out Dead Rising and it didn't get very dark. I can still notice it getting SLIGHTLY darker here and there, but it's almost unnoticeable now.

Shadx - You may have Dynamic Contrast enabled, which is something I had on my new Samsung LCD. Switch that off and you should be golden.
