I haven't really followed this thread, but in a thread about the best anime around... how can anyone vote against a classic animated movie that can trigger emotions in audiences of all ages as Grave of the Fireflies has and choose Digimon.
What is the meaning of life? That's so easy, the answer is TETRIS.
@Sykotek - I don't like depressing stuff. It could be the greatest masterpiece ever created, and I'd still vote against it. The freakin' trailer made me cry, man. That's no good in my book.
@Mickeymac: I wasn't seriously questioning other people's tastes in anime, but I do think people should definitely watch Grave of the Fireflies... I hope you've watched it as well and aren't just basing your opinion on just the trailer...I just clicked it right now...which leads me to my next point...
FFS! NO ONE SHOULD BE WATCHING THAT GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES TRAILER IF THEY HAVEN'T ALREADY WATCHED THE MOVIE!!! MASSIVE SPOILERS!
Granted, you will likely react the same emotionally to it having seen the trailer or not, but it may impact your enjoyment of the movie and you just shouldn't do that to yourself. I watched it around 20 years ago on VHS, definitely one of the most touching films I've ever seen.

I recall some of those spoilers being pretty obvious. And yeah, I saw it. Most of it. I had to quit after a while because I was emotionally dead halfway through. I had the same reaction to other depressing stuff, like Victory Gundam, which I'd say is easily up there with GotFF in terms of depression levels. Honestly, when things are that frequently bad, I come to expect bad things to happen, and they lose their impact.
Really liked it for some reason-- more so than Tamers. But whatevs.
This must be explained. I need to know whether I should hit you in the face with a wooden board or stab your avatar while you're sleeping.
Editing the post to be a a bit more OT: I am going to 100% pass on this one. While I've heard so many good things about Grave Of The Fireflies, I haven't seen it and thus don't feel justified putting it over Digimon Frontier even though I disliked that season a lot.

I actually thought Frontier was the second best Digimon season. The only major flaw I recall were some major missed opportunities to develop the bad guys as well as the heroes. The story could've been better, too, and the characters were a bit annoying at first, but those are easily forgiven. Otherwise I thought it was really good for what it was. It was different, in a good way.
I have to vote for Grave of the Fireflies, even though it's the only movie I've seen since the turn of the century that has moved me to tears (or maybe because of it?).
Yeah, it's not exactly something that you just sit down and watch for a casual evening of entertainment (in the same way that you don't watch Schindler's List for a rollicking good time - unless you're a monster or something), but its one of the most tremendously powerful, moving, haunting and well-crafted films ever made, anime or otherwise.
