I almost missed this topic. Anyways, I started up a new file yesterday. Got through the prologue and first chapter. I'm hoping to get a 100% completion, but there's a lot of stuff in this game o.o
I did various side-stuff between the end of Chapter 1 and the start of Chapter 2 last night...took an hour and a half just for all that! Long game indeed. Anyway, I'm saved in the start of Chapter 2 now.

OK, I got to stop. Girl friend has been away this weekend and I have blitzed throught the game. 14hours 22minutes and I have just completed chapter 4. Also done loads of fetch and carry missions. I think I might not play during the week as I don't want to finnish way before January. Got COD Black Ops to start too (Had it a week and not even put it in the machine). Anyway, initial thoughts. Is it just me or did the text at the intro go way too fast. I am loving the charming graphical style, I love the way the buildings pop up as you enter/leave them. Totally got the TMNT thing. Love it.
All the toads have fuuny names. The chance to deal more / take less damage with well timed button presses is great. Didn't realise I could open the chests until about 9 hours in. I was expecting some kind of treasure hunt towards the end ala windwaker.
@RetroRich: The intro text does go relatively quickly, but I wouldn't say "way too fast." But then, I'm a relatively fast reader...nowhere near a speed champ, mind, but enough that I had no issue with that intro except for the fact that no sound plays when the text changes. That little problem makes it easy to miss text 'cause you're looking at the visuals.
I definitely expect to finish the game long before the end of the Club session myself. I don't see anything wrong with that, though...I can still follow the thread and keep up with the discussion. I'd be much further through the game already if the Sly Collection wasn't eating up massive chunks of my time.

Started on Friday slowly, trying to get my controller situation working first. Didn't want to wait for a classic by mail, so I got out 2 broken GC ones and I was afraid they would be a hindrance, but now that I got one working well, it seems these controls are almost best suited for it since primarily A and B are used. I had to clean and tighten everything but it's way worth it, in case anyone else is interested in doing it with a GC controller, check out some youtube video's on fully cleaning the inside, they're great and it works like a charm.
Ok, I'm having a blast playing this again. This is yet another prime example of Nintendo's mastery of the game design craft. This game has a calculated "kiddy" feel, with a slow ramp up in difficulty, while still being deep, long and really fun for a wide audience. MINOR SPOILERS : My play through the beginning wordy bits felt a little slow, but once the battles start it's so much fun and feels really natural. The story parts are also silly but carry the same classic dramatic structure that bring nice tension to even the worst of cinema and literature. The tension of the Kidnapped stars' plea for help is strangely appealing since they're so goofy looking, though we've already become attached to the characters.
I've already gotten sucked into 1 all morning session, thanks for this club idea. I haven't made time for focused veg-ing out in a while. I love the Ninja Turtles parody and generally the tongue in cheek dialogue is really great here. Like when the Princess is searching her room and comments about all her pink dresses being exactly the same but all having minor differences to make it worthwhile.
my first play of this game was at a time when I had given up on the GC and sold it to go back and try all the N64 games I had missed. That was so long ago I forgot what fun it was, where would I be without the VC? My secret vintage game love would not be so secret if I had to keep all the old systems here. I guess Things like Jet Force Gemini (Rare) will rest forever, though, that would've been a great game for this club.
Naturally, spoilers. Minor ones, mind Completed Chapter 1 (for at least the fifth time now, I'll actually bother to play it all the way through some time xD ). The thing that bothers me with Paper Mario is that the partners aren't exactly well-spaced. You get three in the first chapter, two within about half an hour of each other. And the next is pretty close to the beginning of Chapter 2, and iirc you don't get the next one until aaaaages after that. Pretty hectic week now - lots of coursework, lots of project, and my birthday to look forward to, so I'll start Chapter 2... whenever I get a chance. It's the desert next, iirc? Gah, I always get obsessive-compulsive with that and have to explore EVERY. SINGLE. AREA. of it and defeat all the enemies. It takes hours. But at least Mario gets a couple more levels out of it.
I'm having way more fun with this playthrough than I did when I first beat the game a couple years back. Thanks for setting this up, HolyMackerel!
Anyways, I'm saved right before the Koopa Bros. Fortress. I've been putting a bigger emphasis on BP this time around, and using Goombario's Tattle ability, which I NEVER used once my first playthrough. I had no idea it exposed a specific enemies lifebar for the rest of the game! I never thought I'd come back to this game, but I'm hella glad I did.
What I don't like about the first game is that you can go through a whole battle, and if you're at a high level, you get zero star points. That's just stupid and annoying.

this. i had totally forgotten about this. but, yes, definitely this.

well to be fair, if you needed to grind that much in Paper Mario, you're not very good at RPGs
Only played like 30 minutes so far as i have been at a come dine with me party all weekend. I really enjoy the game and its my first rpg. Ive never played one before ! Also it has a classic mario feeling
I also like the whole thing in the mansion where you could turn into 8-bit Mario. Reminded me alot of SMRPG.

true. but it is annoying to waste time in a battle and gain no xp
@Kingbuilder Put spoiler warnings please! D: I didn't know about that either!
Up to chapter 2 now. Got more party members and a bunch more badges. I can see why BP is so important. O_o The badges are really awesome!
Did you guys know that if you talk to Goomario (C down) while facing an NPC then he'll describe them? You can find out loads of quirky details about the Toad Town residents. They're all terrible gossips lol. Also his Tattle comments about each of the Koopa Bros. are funny! These sorts of details add a lot of charm to the game. I'm going to use Goomario on everything now lol.
End of Chapter 1 SPOILERS
The Koopa Bros.' castle was pretty cool. Not too many surprises there. I was expecting the trap door question mark box... but you were meant to! I noticed the cracks in the walls and figured I'd be able to do something with them. Bombette is really useful. Her bomb attack is the most powerful attack I have right now.
The Bullet Bill part was cool! You don't see that sort of action/platforming challenge in many RPGs, even action RPGs. It was a nice feeling, like playing an old Mario game. Anyone notice you can get loads of exp when fighting the Bullet Bill cannons? I got like 50 exp because I made a few mistakes. Each Bullet Bill gives a lot of exp and they keep regenerating. That was sweet. I hope there are more Bullet Bill cannons later on!
Also I loved the Koopa Bros.' fake Bowser machine! Goomario was right, he did look kind of lame lol. And I loved this line: "The sequel should be called Paper Bowser!" During the fight I was thinking... this is kind of easy for a boss fight. I was using Hammer Charge and doing quite a lot of damage with that. And then the Koopa Bros. popped out (I had like 9 HP left so I was a little worried) and they were actually pretty challenging. Once I got rid of one of them it was a breeze though. It's pretty hard to guard against their spinning attack.
Early Chapter 2 SPOILERS
Playing as Princess Peach was an awesome surprise! I was like... I wonder if she can jump? Nope, lol. Another shout out to her dresses being almost exactly the same. Nice nod to the fact that she pretty much always wears the same dress! The Bowser diary entries were hilarious. "I hope she likes me..." He's such a dufus really! It's a good thing Bowser hasn't used the Star Rod to wish for Peach to like him. Actually... why hasn't he done that? lol
Anyone notice the awesome lighting effects on her when she was out on the balcony? They highlighted her back and hair when you face away from the balcony door. It looked really nice, and it's something you don't see in games with 2D characters.
And whoa, Toad Town is bigger than it looks... I wonder if they use the same shape in every game for the Mushroom Kingdom castle and Toad Town. Then again there was no Toad Town in SM64. O_o Thinking about it, the world was eerily empty...
Gah, I always get obsessive-compulsive with that and have to explore EVERY. SINGLE. AREA. of it and defeat all the enemies. It takes hours. But at least Mario gets a couple more levels out of it.
I just finished doing exactly that this evening.
Minor gameplay spoilers: Oh, and I don't think the partners are spaced out SOOO badly. You get one in the Prologue, two in Chapter 1, and one each in Chapters 2-6. I guess it's just how Parakarry comes so early in Chapter 2 and Bow a bit later into Chapter 3 that makes it seem long.
@grenworthshero: That can be annoying, but the game supplies three badges to limit the problem: Insta-kill by first strike, spin attack, and just plain touching them. I used the spin attack one a lot in the desert once I reached the level where local enemies stopped giving Star Points. End gameplay spoilers
@HolyMackerel: You are amazing consistent about misspelling Goombario's name.
what I'm liking about this is that it feels like it's something of a RPG for non-RPG people. it's so forgiving about walking you into things and building you up to what could be a daunting interface. I've never been an RPG guy at all; they just bore me to tears and I never liked the fighting systems or the time commitment but this game really keeps me there. Maybe it's not a true RPG for a true fan, but I don't mind, and I think that's the idea.
Are any of you more hardcore RPG fans, and can you say how this holds up or is this kind of a "kiddie RPG"?
