How are people of different racial backgrounds somehow more unrealistic than all of those?

I think it's stupid to accuse Nintendo of racism on this one, although I would like to see more diversity in their titles, but claiming that it would somehow be unrealistic to have an Indian girl or black guy in a world inhabited by sentient turtles and dinosaur-riding plumbers with fire powers is a bit absurd.

It's unrealistic because it's a fictional world that's well established and has a very clear set of characters to it. To bring a black person into Mario at this point would be so obviously a superficial appeal to equality, instead of a genuine creation.
Something like Zelda is a lot different. Zelda games tend to span a huge world and have a more diverse set of characters. Ganondorf isn't white. Nor are the Gerudo. Which most people probably didn't notice at the time. Because, as I say, it actually fits into the game and isn't tacked on as an empty gesture.

Claiming that Nintendo is racist is like saying that Mother Teresa used to kill people.

Because it's a fictional creation that has absolutely no obligation to make a social statement? It's designed purely to have fun. If it had been all black characters, should we demand a white character so white people can enjoy it too? No. It wouldn't change the quality of the game at all.

Lol hate to point it out but she did spend quite a lot of energy convincing people in the third world not to use condoms.

Games are art. What is the purpose of art?

Mario does have dark-skinned characters:

If Nintendo can crowbar in Waluigi, Toadette, and Pink Gold Peach, I think they could find space for a darker skinned character.

'Art' is a term so nebulous as to be more than meaningless. The purpose of any piece of art is whatever it's creator intended it to do. Mario Kart is art in the same way that Call Of Duty or a blockbuster Will Smith film is art. For that matter, even pornography is art. And the purposes of these things are very simple and deliberately don't step into deeper and controversial territory. They're about fun and excitement. That's it. And part of what makes them fun is that they're not pulled down by any other requirements. They're perfect escapism partly because they're completely detatched from reality.

XD a racist problem OMG I've heard it all now. I don't wanna be that guy but Nintendo is from Japan and well Japan isn't exactly a melting pot society like the US, which probably explains why anything from Japan lacks any diversity when it comes to characters. The best we get are stereotypes of what Japan believes other cultures are like (I mean all you have to do is look at fighting games coming from japan for a good example of what I'm talking about). I think it's just a western thing, you all remember the 90s and the generic multi-racial group of friends that always hung out together and the white kid and the black kid were always best friends? Yeah Japan's not that diverse if it was they'd probably pull a 90s stunt on people.

No dark skinned Nintendo characters!? Untitled

Mario games do have a certain characters that are dark so I don't see the problem in this.

Infact I don't see the rasist problem being there at all. Did any of you guys ever mentioned Fire Emblem: Awakening? Or how about Advance war series?

Also if we are going by the naming convention of the Mario series, what sort of stereotypical name are they going to give this dark skinned person?

Nintendo has koopas, goombas, kokiri, manaketes, chozo, etc. What racist problem?

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

I'm not too annoyed by the racism claims honestly, it's stupidity, but I would be irritated if Nintendo gave this attention and apologized for the roster much like how they apologized with Tomodochi. Look at the statements made and make changes to a future entry accordingly, no need to give an apology because at that point you're basically confirming that there is an issue with how the current product was developed. That said, Nintendo could have included a dark-skinned character and that would be Il Piantissimo. He's a notable rival in Super Mario Sunshine and, in the ending with the magic paintbrush, sets up a hook for a sequel. He would've been random, but with a character like Pink Gold Peach, randomness doesn't matter. I personally wouldn't mind him returning. Also, as mentioned, there are Miis. If you want a dark-skinned racer, make one.
