Yep. I seriously hope they remake the game in modern graphics after they're done with FF7. The opera scene would be brilliant in full 3D with proper singing.
@Dezzy Yeah I’d also love to see how they’d reimagine it. Though I feel like it’s sort of a 2016 Doom vs. classic Doom thing, where the power of suggestion will always have an it’s own appeal.
There is a kind of personality and creativity to having midi voices stand in for real ones. It was obviously a limitation of the SFC hardware, but there is a beauty to that limitation nonetheless.
Yes that section in Edith Finch is great, to be honest most of the chapters In Edith Finch are really memorable. It's tough to pick just one, the bathtub is up there as well. How it quickly flips from playful to dark.
Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice is also filled with memorable scenes. The section where you're passing through the area with all the hands is really striking. Detroit Become Human has a very similar scene in the junkyard. That's also fantastic
@Wargoose Yeah it definitely points to a unique exposition/ emotions can be communicated to the player. The most obvious way is through cutscenes, the Kojima game where the player is given limited movement through a scripted sequence (same with Half-Life), a narrator or internal monologue where the character speaks to themselves, or scattered journals and notes (the most famous example being the RE games).
Edith Finch is interesting because the interactions play out like a Warioware microgame, but subtly suggest something about the personality of each character. It’s a memorable approach.
Hellblade and Detroit have interesting moments too. You reminded me of that boss battle that is entirely in darkness in HB. That along with the other terrifying moment you mentioned were really surprising.
Things in games that have been memorable for me are:
Mario 64: Exploring each world.
Zelda Ocarina of Time: Here there are so many things that are memorable, but I'll choose the Forest Temple so that this doesn't take long 😅
Metroid Prime 2 Echoes: Torvus Bog and Sanctuary. I love these two areas and love the music of them.
Zelda Majora's Mask: Seeing Termina Field. I guess I like it because while it is smaller than Hyrule Field's Ocarina, it is more diverse having 4 types of terrain (woods, snow, beach and statues with canyon).
Paper Mario (64): My introduction to the RPG genre. For some reason my most memorable moments here are Dry Dry Desert and Dry Dry Ruins. Oh, and also the island of the yoshis (can't remember it's name now).
Sonic Adventure DX (Game Cube): Seeing Sonic transforming into Super Sonic was truly memorable. I have never had a Sega console. I was mostly Nintendo until 2 years ago when I bought a PS2.
Undergoing games:
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity
-The final boss of Kirby's Adventure (first game I ever beat, and multiple times!)
-The first half hour of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearer (way better than the game deserved tbh)
-Probably a lot of parts of Xenoblade Chronicles tbh
-And Mother 3
-The final cases of each of the original Phoenix Wright trilogy
-The finales of each of the Mass Effect Trilogy (even if the last one is partially for the wrong reasons lololol)
-The GTA 5 heists
-Chapter 6 of Celeste
-First trip to New Donk City in Mario Odyssey
-Spending an eternity on Rayman Origins' secret level
-Spending an eternity on the boss rush in Shovel Knight (New Game +)
-Tick Toc Clock
-The times I played the endgame of a game via someone else's save file instead of via my skill as a kid (mostly OOT, Majora's Mask, Banjo Kazooie and for a short while, Paper Mario)
-The final optional stealth/chase area in the main town in Beyond Good and Evil
