I downloaded 4 when it came to the VC, expecting it to be decent at best...but I love it. No slip in quality there, if you ask me. In fact, I'd rank it higher than I'd rank 1 and 3.
I don't think I've ever played 5 - 6, but I'm rectifying that as I just placed an order for the Anniversary Collection on Amazon. ($10! Whee!) It also contains 7, which I adore and think gets a seriously undeserved bad rep, and 8, which I know nothing about except that there's a boss called Clown Man.

You sir, have good taste in Mega Man games. And good choice getting the Anniversary Collection, it's a bunch of great games all on a single disc. But, did you get the Gamecube version? I have the GC version, and there's a few things that are....a little off.
I also like 7, but I can understand why some would dislike it. Some people also dislike 8, but I think it's really fun to play.
@MegamanStoneSmash91: Oh ok so are the 8 bit version something like the Super Mario Crossover game? Cause if thats the case I will check them out.
Lol no I was saying that the SNES version is on the collection and that is all I have even known lol. I didnt even know there was an 8 bit version till you said something lol. I know I can be confusing sometimes.
I did the first 3 bosses MM5. I started off with Gravityman then went to Gyroman and than did Crystal man. Hopefully I will get some more time later to play it some more.
Well, you can't play it directly online like Super Mario Bros. Crossover. You have to download it, but if you ask me, it's worth the download. It's an almost exact replica of the SNES version (well, they did the best they could have possibly done, and it really stays true to the original game) but with 8-bit graphics and sound. It's good stuff, especially for those who didn't like Mega Man on SNES and prefer 8-bit.
Playin' 5 now? Hope you enjoy it. In MM5, I like to start with Star Man. He's easy to beat and I like his level and theme, it's one of my favorite songs in the game. I also really like the Wily stage theme.
@MegaStoneSmash91: Yeah I saw that its a download and went ahead and checked it out. The only problem I have is using the keyboard its just awkward for a MM game. Anyway you know of that I can use my 360 controller to play it?? As for likeing 5 I have played this game many of times I just never beat it is all. 5 deffinatly ranks up there in my favorite MM games.
@Chicken Brutus: Yeah I bought the MM collection on Gamecube years ago when it was first released, so I never bothered with the VC versions of 1, 2, 3, or 4. I can say it was one of the best purchases I made Its one of the few Gamecube games that I still play on my Wii as you can noticed by this thread lol.
I was surprised by 4 as well I bought it years ago on the NES and was disappointed by it. I recently tried it again on the Collecton and ended up beating it the other night and I really enjoyed it. I am glad that I decided to give it another chance.
You wont be disappointed by the collection as MegaStoneSmash said there are a few things off with the music and sound effects but if you never played them before or haven't in a long time than you probably wont notice them. Still if you dont have any of the systems that the 8 came out or you cant find the originals the collection is the next best thing.

@Waveboy Please stop saying it's "my" opinion. I know it's my opinion, I just have a hard time being nice when people start talking negatively about some of my favorite things. Sorry if I came off a little rude I'm normally a very nice guy. I'll try to keep my opinion arguments in a more neutral space. I did read your entire comment, though, but I don't think there's really anything for me to say. I'm glad you clarified that you didn't absolutley hate MM4. And at least you like the boss theme from 4, that's something.
@Tasuki I've heard that people can use their PS3 and 360 controllers on the computer, but I don't know how they do it. I use some sort of controller converter that allows you to use Gamecube, PS2, and XBox (not 360) controllers to play games on the computer. That, coupled with a program called Joy2Key which turns keyboard key presses into button presses on any controller with a joystick of some kind, like the PS2 controller. It's much MUCH better than using the keyboard, but I guess you need the right equipment to use it.
As for the Anniversary Collection, here's a ful list of the differences I've noticed:
MM1: Some of the sound effects are too loud, and some are too quiet. The ones that are loud are "annoyingly loud", not just loud. It seems to be a lot of the high pitched sounds, mostly. The title screen now includes the sound that plays on the Japanese Rock Man when you push start, otherwise it is basically the same. MM2: Some of the sounds don't sound nearly as good here, mainly the teleporting sound and when you select a Robot Master. There is only one difficulty here, which is "Difficult". All NES games had the title screen changed to use the "Mega Man" title words from MM3, which makes the title screen for MM2 worse looking. Other than these, there appear to be no major differences. MM3: All the glitches have been removed, so you can no longer use the 2nd controller to perform super jumps and such. The image of Mega Man that appears during the "get weapon" sequence appears on the title screen. Otherwise, it's basically unchanged. MM4: Basically Unchanged. MM5: In the letters that spell out "MEGAMANV", the "V" has been changed to a "5". Otherwise, it's basically unchanged. MM6: Basically unchanged. MM7: On the Gamecube version, some of the music sounds slightly different and the boss intro theme sounds horrible. Bass now says "Darn" instead of "Damn" in one of his dialouge sequences. The Mode 7 animation in the ending of the game has been completely removed. No other noticeable changes. MM8: Some of the music sounds slightly different, and the second set of Robot Masters have their voices sped up outside their introductions. There is only one option on the title screen now: "Game Start". No other changes. And all 6 NES games have their music loop, so if you've been in a stage for an extended period of time, the music will start over completely.
@MegaStoneSmash91: Yeah I used my 360 controller on a few games on my PC Batman Arkham Asylum and Dungeon & Dragons Online, all did for those games was plug the controller in and go but I believe those games were programmed to be able to use the controller, I wasnt sure if that was the case with that MM game you told me about. I have heard about Joy2Key from a friend who uses that for flash type games so I will ask him and see if it works with MM7.
Wow I didnt know there were some many differences I know about the ending in MM7 something about them not being able to emulate the Mode 7 technology. Oh and I did read somewhere about them changing Bass's dialogue to make it an E rating instead of a T rating. I did noticed the music looping as well but I took it for granted that the NES versions did the loop thing too. Kinda weird that they change the 5 in the letters to get Beat from its Roman counterpart. I guess because of Megaman X they were afraid that people would think that its a V for the letter V as opposed to the Roman numeral 5. Even though with all the changes they still did a good job on the collection.
Oh and as for 6 I really cant appreciates it yet since I only played it a few times years ago on the NES but I will be able to give you my thoughts on it as soon as I am done with MM5, but from what I have seen none of the robot masters from 6 bug me just Centaurmans weapon bugs me.
Wow I am starting to hate MM5 I dont know if its me or what but they seemed to really turn up the difficulty in MM5 compared to the previous 4. I made it to the first stage of Wily's castle but than had to call it quits cause I was getting aggervated lol.
I did notice the sound thing with MM5 though like when you defeated the Robot master and Megaman jumps up the that energy goes into Megaman the sound effect is very loud compared to the rest of the game. Going to give it another try here in a few hours.

Some of the Proto Man and Wily stages are pretty tricky, but good use of Rush and special weapons will win the day for sure.
I forgot about that particular sound in MM5 on the AC. Annoyed me every time I beat a Robot Master, it's way to loud and high pitched. Just remember the abnormally high drop rate of 1-ups in 5. If you can find a good spot to farm if your low on lives, you'll probably get a few. I usually use those chicken robots that send walking eggs at you, since the eggs keep coming until you destroy the chicken.
@MegaStoneSmash91: Yeah I noticed the high drop rate of 1-Ups but on the AC you can only get a max if 9 lives I dont remember if its the same way with the original NES games.
Oh and I cannot stand Rush in this game they totally screwed him up, I dont like how as soon as you get on Rush Jet it takes off. Several times I barely got on and it took off leaving me behind. And the Rush coil is a big joke it uses energy like nothing and than acts more like a pogo stick than the Rush Coil. Very disappointed on the Rush in 5.
I do like how the fixed the megabuster in MM5 from 4. I am actually finding myself taking time and charging this one.
But yeah after really playing this one and getting into this game I have to say if there is a weak game in the series, than MM5 is it so far I hope 6 is better than this one.

@Tasuki The max amount of lives is the same on the Collection and the original cartridge; You can only have 9 lives. In MM2 & 3 you can have many more than that. I once had over 20 lives on MM3, it's kind of interesting to see how many you can collect sometimes.
I hear ya about Rush. He's not quite as useful in 5, and I don't know why they had to change Rush Coil. Sometimes I even forget to jump off him when I use it because I forget that he operates differently than in the other games. And it takes like 4 or 5 units of energy to use Rush Coil, what ever happened to using only 2 or 3? Does having the spring on Rush's belly require more power than having it on his back or something?
I still like MM5, but it's my least favorite in the music department. To this day, it still has my least favorite stage select theme; it's too calm and doesn't really give that feel of selection like the others. A few of the songs are awesome though (Star Man's theme, Gyro Man's theme, the Wily stage theme) but most of the tunes sound too similar and aren't very catchy for me. It has the best Mega Buster of the bunch, and the gameplay is great, but most of the Master Weapons are lacking and aren't all that useful. It has some unique level design, especially in Gravity Man's, Star Man's, and Wave Man's stages. Some would disagree about it being a weak entry in the series, but it does have it's share of problems.
@MegaStoneSmash91: Yeah I really liked the jet ski part in Wave Man's stage very original, I thought I was going to have to do another underwater stage like Bubbleman's or Diveman's stage. Plus the reverse gravity in Gravityman's stage was nice too.
But I dont know there is just something missing with this Megaman I dont know quite what it is but it just doesnt have the same feeling like the previous 4 games. Dont get me wrong here its still a great game it just seems different. Other than Waveman's Gravityman's and Starman's stage the stages were rather bland also the bosses in Protomans castle was a let down too. Capcom seem to slip a bit with this one.
@Tasuki Most of the stages are pretty bland, In Charge Man's stage, the only enemy that really has anything to do with the stage are the Mets riding in trains, everything else is generic enemies from every other stage. There was no clever twist to Stone Man's stage either. It's just a bunch of random enemies that don't really have anything to do with the stone theme. You didn't even have to dodge falling rocks or anything, not to mention that his stage goes on way to long. If you need a fix for clever and appropriate enemies and good stage gimmicks, play Mega Man 10. It's full of them, from the sports-themed enemies in Strike Man's stage, to the Digital-computerized feel of Sheep Man's stage. Probably one of the best MM games in terms of creativeness.
The bosses in Proto Man's castle were all variations on Dark Man, so no, they weren't very interesting. I too feel that this one was a letdown in some places, but it does plenty of things right as well. Still a good game through and through.
@MegaStoneSmash91: Yeah no arguments it is a good game through and through just a little bland compared to the others. Hopefully It will be a little better in Wilys castle.
RetiredPush Square Moderator and all around retro gamer.
@Tasuki The Wily stages in 5 have a really nice tune. It's one of the better songs in the game. A couple of the Wily bosses are kind of interesting, but the final battle is pretty easy, especially if you use Beat. Oh, and there's something I'd like to mention about the boss rush in 5. When you enter a teleporter to fight one of the Robot Masters, you go to the exact same room you fought him in when you went through his stage. Even the boss shutter is there! The color hasn't changed, the look hasn't changed, and it looks stupid going from battle to battle. You'd think they'd use the same graphics from the Wily stage to make the rooms, but no, they look exactly the same. I just think it's dumb is all, every other game uses a new room, why not 5?
@MegaStoneSmash91: Well sadly I didnt get Beat cause I missed the one letter in Crystalmans Stage and I never found the one in Stonemans stage, so no Beat for me lol.
That is odd that they just reused the same room I have played some MM games where the layout is the same but it has never been the same room. It almost seems that they were in a rush to get MM 5 out or something. I dont know was Capcom working on Megaman X the same time they were working on MM 5? Cause if they were that would explain some of its faults. Deffinatly odd though that they used the rooms over again.
RetiredPush Square Moderator and all around retro gamer.
@Tasuki I take it you know where the letter is in Crystal Man's stage, but why didn't you go back for it? And the letter in Stone Man's stage is near the start of the stage behind a breakable wall. There are 3 secret rooms in Stone Man's stage, each covered up by destroyable rocks. There is one in the room where Eddie appears, for instance, and all you have to do to find it is shoot at the wall on top of the small step on the right side. The rocks will look slightly different than the others, and it's pretty easy to miss them.
Mega Man 5 was released 2 years before MMX, but I'm not sure how long they were working on it. They could have been working on them both at the same time, but maybe not.
