Then why are they called the Mario Brothers??? Me and my brother are the Oliver Brothers where I live in, my last name being Oliver. So that explains it all. Case closed.

Isn't it obvious? Mario and Luigi both share the same first name but Luigi goes by his middle name to avoid being confused with his brother.
I seem to recall a lecturer who said she had many siblings with the same first name and did this.

The fact that the creator of the series himself said that they don't have last names trumps the non-canonical movie made by those that had nothing to do with the series. I'd take the man who actually conceived the series anyday.
And this is the Mario series we're talking about. We already have a hard time trying to reason with the Zelda series.
Not to mention it's the most trivial thing you could possibly spend your time actually contemplating...
