I know this is a little outdated (1-2 years outdated), but recently I watched the entirety of the J.J. Abram's Lost. Considering that Abram's new show premieres tonight, and I finished the show and am not scared of spoilers, let's have a discussion!
Naturally, many a spoiler ahead, so if you're even later on the boat than I am, be wary.
EDIT: ATTENTION POSTERS! Please put all spoilers in HTML style formatting, as in spoilers (No URLs necessary) Anyway keep that in mind. Friends.
Yeah, turns out those two shows aren't actually that connected. They have three names working on both (other than Jorge Garcia): J.J. Abrams (who isn't actually that involved with either of them, as I have learned), Jack Bender, and Elizabeth Sarnoff. But that's not a lot. Alcatraz is okay, the first couple episodes weren't as good as the first couple episodes of Lost, but it was still pretty good.
I don't really watch TV...but I got hooked on Lost back when it aired in (2004?). Anyways, I ended up seeing them all thru Netflix. Being an avid Stephen King reader and X-Files nut, I instantly fell in love with Lost. The writers definitely were influenced by both. What an awesome show!!! (even if the ending did leave the viewer with an odd feeling of....Wait - what just happened?)
I'd comment more specifically, but honestly i don't even know where to start. The show was simply amazing, and a lot of the characters' story-arcs hit close to home for a variety of reasons. I'm in the camp of those who loved the ending, but i completely understand the viewpoint of those who didn't.

I watched the first two episodes of Alcatraz but it has a bit worried. J.J. Abrams likes to put BS in his shows that we are just supposed to except or that never really get explained. I'm worried if I watch the show it will pan out into something stupid. In Lost they all turned out to be dead (if I understood correctly, I didn't watch the whole show.) With Alcatraz they need to explain how all the prisoners ended up in modern times, if they don't come up with an good explanation it will feel like a waste. I don't expect them to reveal it right away, but they can't drag it out for too long. I stopped watching Alias after like the 3rd or 4th season because I got tired of Rimbaldi BS, as it dragged on for far too long. His shows start off promising but after a few season's tend to slide down the toilet. The only exception I've seen to this is Fringe which probably is in it's last season anyway.
You have to remember that they had no idea how Lost was going to end. It may have been random, but that randomness really suited the type of show that Lost was.

What Navi said. It's very difficult for most network-TV series to really plan out everything in advance, given the way that episodic TV works (particularly for US-produced shows), where the goal is really to keep the show on as long as it can continue to be profitable, rather than producing a finite series (see also: How I Met Your Mother).
Also, they didn't all turn out to be dead (well, except for in the "flash-sideways" universe of the last season, but that's something else entirely), you misunderstood — although based on the initial reaction to the finale, you're not alone on that misperception.
Wgiven the way that episodic TV works (particularly for US-produced shows), where the goal is really to keep the show on as long as it can continue to be profitable, rather than producing a finite series (see also: How I Met Your Mother).

Heh, exactly. I just used HIMYM as an example, as the whole premise of the show originally implied a finite series, but since it turned out to be a huge hit, it just keeps going.
There was certainly a lot in LOST that was just Darlton throwing out ideas that they thought were cool (which they've essentially admitted to), and that's why they all but begged ABC to allow them to set an end date for the show — so they could work towards wrapping things up rather than throwing more against the wall.

Yeah HIMYM is a great show. And probably the charm that comes with it is that the viewers can discover who the mother is at any time, but the series isn't fixed on finding her identity. Much like Seinfeld, which is literally a show about nothing, the narrative continues, without the possibility of an ending, as there is no goal in sights.

What I loved most about Lost, (re-watching the whole 6 seasons currently as well, so expect more references to season 1), the randomness that it produced – a ship shipwrecked in the middle of the island, the Swan station, a polar bear, some giant smoke cloud thing – it sort of followed the premise that sitcoms produce, with no real end in sight, it was more a story about survival. Then they really go Inception on it, by presenting possible outcomes, various tangents. It's sort of a shame the way most TV shows (non-sitcoms) end, as it's almost always given the subtitle as the last season. It brings a connotation of an ending, and the premise of an ending, it's good to wrap up loose ties, but at the same time it brings an end to anything new.

Lost is my favorite show! In fact I used to run a small Lost blog called Room 23 back when the show was on air. Such an awesome experience discussing the show and just all of the great experiences that came out of it!
I also love Alcatraz, Person of Interest and Fringe which JJ Abrams also started and let others take off with.

Is room 23 the one that Alex's boyfriend was in (can't remember his name, I think it was something like Carl)? The one that had those weird images and the crazy sound and was later handwaved as "hypnotism"?
I really liked that feeling of suspense and confusion when the show started. My favorite episode are the ones that completely throw you off ("Two For The Road" (also known as the one where Michael shoots Ana Lucia and Libby), either the season 2 or 3 finale when it's revealed that all of Jack's flashbacks the whole episode had been flash-forwards, or the season 3 premier when they show the Others' "camp" in the beginning).
But then as I started watching the last few episodes, or the last season in general, I realized "Oh crap, they don't know where they are going with this." The finale was a little bit disappointing because it didn't explain some things (at least not directly, I guess if I had paid more attention I would understand). But I was very satisfied in the finale regarding Jack overall, as I had begun to dislike him a few seasons back and he really redeemed himself.
You should probably find a gas station or something, ask for directions, I mean I dunno where the eff you are. D:
Lieutenant Commander of the Lesbian Love Brigade
There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.

Yeah that was Karl that was in Room 23, The thing is they didn't come out a directly answer everything, but theres a lot of clues peppered throughout the entire series that with a rewatch of the whole series things are clearer, but there are somethings like Walt that don't really get told completely. Personally I feel that they did have a rough plan that they were following with a definate purpose. While I may not have enjoyed everything about it, I have to say that it was an incredible ride and I'd do it all over again if I could.

LOST was amazing, I picked it up at the season 2 finale (my mom had watched since season 1), and went back and caught up later, love love LOVE that show, as for Walt/Michael, the reason they wrote them out for a bit was cause the actor playing Walt was growing up faster than the character was (as a few seasons=only a few months in the show), so they had to improvise

They did make an epilogue. It was 12 minutes long, but I can only find the abridged version. Here it is:
Thread maintenance, keepin' the thread alive everybody. Just thought of Lost 'cause the new episode of Alcatraz is tonight. Last episode was really boring, but hopefully this one's better.
