Mandatory installs of certain disc-based games. They take up too much space on the hard drive, and they should be optional.
PSN games don't install automatically after you download them.
I have the 160GB PS3, and I noticed that the game installs take up quite a bit of space. How is it that I used up 20GB from just a few games (MAG demo, Sonic Adventure, Pac-Man Championship DX demo, Galaga DX demo, flOw, Blast Factor)? I guess the PS3 doesn't compress game data as well as the Wii and 3DS. If I'm wrong about this feel free to correct me.
EDIT: How does the PS3 compare to the 360 with data taking up hard drive space? Is there a difference?
The reason data is installed is to decrease loading times. If you want to wait a few minutes for a single level to load be my guest.

The PS3 is the best console in the the World. Whats wrong with you?

But you would agree that game data uses up too much space on the hard drive?
Because PS3 games are much bigger and then your other baby console

You could just delete the mandatory install data from disc games if your not going to be playing the game for a while and then install the data again at a later time I think your save data would still be there. As for PSN games they do install automatically as long as you don't put them in the backround to download.

Oh ok. Well that makes sense. But do Xbox 360 games take up as much space as PS3 games? Are the data sizes the same for both consoles' disc-based and download software?
Those games did not take up that much space. There is a certain amount of space on the harddrive reserved for pre-installed software and hardware. Every computer is like that. A 120GB MP3 player will not actually have 120GB of free space when you take it out of the package.

I know that. Out of the entire 160GB hard drive, I have about 149GB for storage space. I downloaded the demos of MAG, Pac-Man Championship DX, Galaga DX, Street Fighter 3: The Third Strike, and the full versions of flOw, Blast Factor, and Sonic Adventure. It says all that data takes up 20GB of space. That can't be right.
Mag is probably more than 5 gb itself. All of the demo's you downloaded are probably the full version with unlock codes you buy. Why does the space really matter when you have 100 gb still left. Silly argument.
Good point. So you're telling me I downloaded the entire game just for a trial version?
As for my original question that no one has answered yet... How do Xbox 360 games compare to PS3 games in terms of data sizes? Is there a difference between the 2?

Well MAG takes about 4.7 GB's on it's own. Then there's still the update for it which I think is around 600-800 mb. So MAG takes up about 5.5gbs on it's own. it's not crazy to think that you've already used up 20gb's since you have MAG + all those other games + game installs + any patches

But here's the thing, why are the download and install data separate files? It would be more efficient if the data installed as it was downloading, not afterwards.
Edit: XBOX 360 does instal the game during the download process. It doesn't bother me. If that makes you want a 360 over a PS3 go for it. I like not having to pay to play online with friends when I feel like it.
Cause the Wii is boring me. Does it really matter?
Well you buy one then all you do is complain.
