Topic: Is Society Really Declining?

If you pay attention to the mass media and get your opinions of society from news reports, etc, then you will always believe that society is worse than it really is. Things make the news when they are the exception, not the rule. So the exceptions are the mass murders, child abductions, terrorist bombings, drive-by shootings, etc.

That said, I do believe the collective intelligence here in the States is somewhat reduced over the past 30 years. It's tough to argue the contrary when most tenured school teachers can testify to the number of students doing poorly in an easier curriculum compared to just 10 years ago, let alone 30.

I like how those who've only been around for 15-20 years are commenting on the decline of society.

A few people here wouldn't know if society was declining, even if it were.

It is the modern media that wasn't there before. Not the bad things that happen.
24 hour news has to continuously report on things. The news is rarely positive.

The biggest thing I notice is how people judge one another and I do not know if its like this worldwide or just my part of the U.S. If you are overweight a lot of places will not hire you in my area. The people are very extremely racial towards one another where I live. I have always appreciated racial diversity and it really does aggravate me when I hear racial swears towards one another as it is Highly uncalled for. Also people used to help people and now if you need help on the job, broken down car etc. Its screw that what do I get out of it attitude. And I am not going to place the blame on a particular generation because as I am nearing the age of 30 and these were things I was noticing as a child. Not everyone but a big portion of society has this better than attitude. Now with that being said this has been going on for years and years it just seems to me as it worsens as time goes on.

It's honestly not as bad as it was in the 70's (the "drug" era, as some call it) but after that age things got better, and I agree since then it's declined a little

the news makes it seem like tons of bad things but they only report bad stuff anyway. its not like they report of happy stuff all day because then no one would watch. The News is evilz and makes everything seem worse! Japan is cool .

That is agreeable... I really hate rap music. I believe there was a test that found out that people that listen to classical music are smarter, and people that listen to crap like lil' wayne are with a "Lack of intelligence" in the slightly non-offensive way.
