Topic: Is having a story mode in fighting games stupid?

I say story in fighting games is as important as story in fighting anime/manga such as Dragon Ball Z, Bleach, Naruto etc...Who are the characters? Why are they fighting? What is their relationship with other characters?

There should be no difference in quality and depth between Ryu & Ken and Goku & Vegeta when it comes to storyline. Story in fighting games can be stupid, but that doesn't mean they should be stupid.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

...when I'm playing a fighting game, I just want to fight. I don't care who/what/why I'm fighting, I just start mashing buttons. And it's fun!

Aren't DBZ games mostly rehashing the story anyway?

I enjoy story modes in any kind of games.

Doesn't matter if the story is dumb, as long as it glues the fights/puzzles/parties/levels together.

I like story modes in fighting games. Subspace Emissary did it right. It allowed you to unlock characters in a more unique way instead of just fighting to get them. Plus, it gave you a better reason to play and gave you awesome clips and achievements. The way I see it, it's just a little extra thing worth paying for.

Catgirls are beautiful creatures that need to be respected and loved, especially by human males. Do everyone a favor and keep kitty girls alive.

Depends. if you know whats going on, yes its fantastic. if you dont, well, no. but honestly, SSBB is probably one of the only good fighting game campaigns.
most you just spawn on a street or some apocalyptic world and fight random things, thn you get to fight a boss that's not creative at all and is just another player you can play as.

I really liked Skullgirls's story a lot. It gives you more insight on the characters and lore, why they are like this (Painwheel especially), and why they fight. Which is what a story in a fighting game should do. In most Fighting games like Street Fighter/Tekken i have to look up wiki pages just to understand why the heck these people are fighting and shooting fire. Heck, i've followed Soul Calibur since the early days and especially in the latest few i've lost track the heck is going on.
For crossover fighters its even less important, but Brawl did it pretty well.

That's pretty much what the Subspace Emissary was in a nutshell...

ah, no not nesacarily. the big bosses like tabuu you couldn't lay as, and most of the time you played in nice forests or techno bases in such.

Street fighter actually has a lot of story from comics and the like and it is really good, also has the Shows and the movies.

As for first person shooters on the other hand like Battlefield 4, no one cares about the story at all and basically pointless.

Dice knew that, that's why they focused on the actual game-play and online, one reason why its beating out COD ghosts. (child online daycare )

oh now I've saw the "mode" part.... story in fighting games is pretty stupid(because it tends to be over the tops and all, but I love this kind of stupid) but Story Modes are pretty cool they aren't necessary but really cool when they don't get in the way of other stuff in the game's development...

I vaguely follow the story in my Soul Calibur and Tekken games. It's not hugely important, but I do appreciate it. Character backstories, if nothing else, are important. Knowing your favorite character's bio is half the fun!

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.
