I'm quite surprised that Tales of the Abyss didn't even make it on the list (from what I've heard, it was regarded the best in the series until a recent release).

The RPG is a helluva broad genre. Even trying to compare games like Skyrim to Chrono Trigger is impossible since they're so different, it'd be like comparing Citizen Kane to Toy Story. The order might as well been randomized, so take the list with a grain of salt.

Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei features several gameplay elements that became standards in the rest of the series, including demon catching and fusing and first-person dungeons.
How IGN won over more common gamers. Now with more crap than ever before. Pokemon over Xenoblade? No Tales of the Abyss. Tales of Symphonia at #77. Final Fantasy VII under SKYRIM? Could you hand me you gun @zez. My PC monitor cannot show such an abomination and live.

I'm trying to understand where all of this Tales of the Abyss love is coming from.
Don't get me wrong, it was a solid game, but there wasn't anything truly exemplary about it. The gameplay was okay, the main characters were okay, the music was okay, and the pace was overall solid (though it felt like you were going on tangents a lot), but there wasn't anything in that game that screamed to me "I'm so awesome". If we're talking 3DS RPGs here, then Devil Survivor: Overclocked kicked it to the curb in every regard outside of an open world to explore, and if we're talking PS2 RPGs then it doesn't even stand a chance against most of the other games on the system.
I understand loving a game a lot, but you've got to look at games critically as well, and I can definitely understand why Abyss isn't on this list. (Plus if it was put on the list then Ys: Book 1 and 2 would go away and that would make me sad.)
Persona 4 being so low, on the other hand...

I put up with people many who would think this list is 100% true. They look at anything without massive media hype and scoff. However PC monitors can be replaced, people's lives cannot.

lol Chrono Trigger isn't #1. You missed April 1st IGN.
I don't think that is really the big problem here. #2 is pretty darn awesome, and of all the games to beat it, Final Fantasy VI would definitely be the one to beat it.
lol you missed April 1st moomoo. yes I'm one of those people who doesn't like 6 a whole lot. I love 4 but damn it nothing gets better than Chrono Trigger.
