Topic: How Americans are? Tell an European.

Nintendo Life is a UK site but we have many US users. I have a lot of fun watching Modern Family. I love it but in a special way the jokes they make about Europeans. As an European I think it is hilarious how they see us as perverted and other stereotypes but it is true that here in UK, Ireland and Western and Northern Europe the society is advanced regarding rights and personal choices. For instance, Holland was the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage. I have never been in US (I will) and I wonder how it is there. I know that some states are very conservative but I have a few gaming friends from US and they seem open-minded and even more sociable and communicative than Europeans. So how do you US guys would define yourselves AND your state (say your state so we see the differences). What is your perception of Europe?

*EDIT: This is not a politics thread. This is for learning about each other and having fun.
Please do not delve into politics on this thread and if you do at least respect each other. Thanks.*

Being a U.S. citizen myself I can honestly say I sadly don't have a very many nice things to say about my country or my fellow Americans at the moment, we are a nation that for decades it seems has been steadily been devolving into violent evangelical, gun-obsessed lunatics!! There's a few smart and open-hearted/open-minded people here and there, but not nearly enough.

As for the rest of the world I don't want to romanticize or fetishize anything because I know the grass isn't too much greener on the other side, but it does seem that individuals in other countries are at least a bit more intelligent then most Americans at times. I mean honestly i'd love to move to another country if I could because there's days I genuinely fear America might just be doomed.

But yes, I genuinely have more respect for European, Asian, etc individuals from other countries than ones from my own at this point. Heck even our Canadian brothers & sisters up north seem more respectable at this point in time.

I’m from the uk but what I know about the mericans is they speak the same language as us. Also they have hands and feet I think

We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

So how do you UK guys stand on American stereotypes. What is your perception of Southern states?

@AlternateButtons Do you hate the Florida Man jokes or have you gotten used to it? Fun to see a resident of another extremely stereotyped state.

@AlternateButtons That’s great. Those articles are some of the best stuff mainstream media can do nowadays. They’re clickbait, but it’s good clickbait.

@BlueOcean As an American living in Japan I don't exactly have a "standard" view on my own country of origin. I would argue that Americans are not a united people in most ways. There are extreme differences of opinions on basically everything. From the mundane to the most serious life and death issues. I would say that one of the few things most Americans have in common are strong opinions. Not the same opinions, but whatever the issue, people have an opinion on it.

Americans are also very individualistic and for lack of a better word, tribal. We tend to place more importance on ourselves or our local family/friend group than even on the community we live in, let alone wider ranging issues.

In my experience people from my country tend to care about themselves first, their group second, similar groups third and then everyone else.

Also despite what media might suggest, I don't believe Americans to be very good at compromise, accepting diversity or being open minded.

However I strongly disagree with any generalizations of Americans as lazy. At least with regards to the general population, you can't be lazy unless you are already wealthy. Normal people simply cannot afford to be. And though America is a wealthy nation most of that wealth is concentrated in a small, elite, ruling class.

Of course these are generalizations and there are exceptions to every generalization.

@CurryPowderKeg79 🤣

@LilDoggo48 Interesting. I think that you are very intelligent though. I wonder why some Americans apparently want to be always on top of the world, I assume the answer is fear.

@1UP_MARIO And legs and everything. 😜

@GyroZeppeli I am not sure I understood your first message! Thanks for the positive feedback, I am genuinely curious and I feel so lucky that I can ask you directly guys. We can learn with this but we can also have fun. When I laugh at those jokes I am not laughing at Americans but more at ourselves... perhaps at both. 🤪

@AlternateButtons What you said is basically that you are a right-wing Italian/Irish immigrant in US with extreme points of view. Why would you think that I do not respect "your country"? I see US as a very heterogeneous country and I haven't even been there yet. I don't judge countries but people and the point of my post is a light-hearted discussion and hopefully learn something. Good and bad people are everywhere... 🤔 Oh and do not worry, I am not going to move to US, so "wouldn't recommend living here" is not necessary.

Thanks @NEStalgia for advising me to use emojis, I hope it helps. 😉

When you mention this I always wonder why would you move. I mean, I would prefer to live in US than in Japan any day and I am European so for an American I do wonder what reasons would you have to live in Japan but you don't have to tell me if you don't want to.

Wow, that has been proved here already, hasn't it? I was afraid of causing WWIII for a second. 😉

I think this is true for Europeans too, sadly. Okay, apparently there is solidarity and social values but I wouldn't say that they are stronger than in US for what I know.

Canadians are welcome to post, I think it's a wonderful nation. And Aussies, I know there are some around here.

I'm a conservative American. I will treat you with the same respect you treat me with. I love my Country and I'm proud of it. Disagreeing with my values is perfectly fine, that's your right. But I don't appreciate being demonized for being right leaning.

My state Florida, is a swing state. We have a healthy mix of both parties here. I would define my state as lovers of the beach and beautiful sunsets. I wouldn't recommend living here because outside of Disney, there's a whole lot of nothing. Some cities here and there but Florida is very rural for the most part. There are also no hills to speak of and it's very humid in the summer. But visiting for Disney and Universal Studios is heavily recommended.

My perception of Europe? You guys seem to have a lot of issues with illegal immigration and terrorism. Especially France. This is why I prefer living here where illegal immigration is being cracked down upon. I'm not a fan of Europe's current political situation and the further we are away from the EU, the better.

But my heritage hails from Ireland and Italy. I still have family living in Ireland and have been to the country four times and have even climbed Croagh Patrick. It's incredibly beautiful. I need to visit Italy one day. So I respect Europe and I do want to travel abroad more. But there's no place I'd rather live than in the USA.

Got any questions? I'd be happy to answer if you're respectful about it.

America has a Domestic terrorist problem. Evangelicals are America'a Jihadists. White Supremacists, Neo-Nazis & Klansmen are all empowered by tRump & his ilk. So yea Conservatives/Republicans deserve all the bad press they get as they have proven time & time again they are horrible people!

Conservatives can whine about being demonized when they stop putting innocent children in cages & letting them die.

@LilDoggo48 Got any sources to back up those claims?

If you ever watched anything other then Faux News maybe you would know what is actually going on in the world and how your party is killing this country & the planet.

And I've played this game before, so no thanks. I could post a dozen sources and you'd cry "Fake News" cause it's not from your Alt-right propaganda machine.

And sorry, it's not my job to educate the ignorant. I can't make your kind less awful, less bigoted, racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. Only you can do that by actually trying to educate yourself and learn to have an open mind & open heart. Good Evening.

Moderate conservative from Missouri here. Overall I think most Americans are like most other people. We get up, go to work/school, and do what we have to do in the game of life.

This is one of the most politically biased statements I have read in a long time. I don’t care about political parties as much as I do the candidates, but I really hate that some people will just try and find ways to demonize the other party. It’s not like the “libtards” are angels sent from God, Democrats have made more mistakes in the past than Republicans ever had. Generalizing people because of what they support isn’t good.
@BlueOcean Now that’s a good one.

@LilDoggo48 Yeah its because you dont have any. You just make assumptions based off your own twisted bias.

"Evangelists are the new Jihadists!" Yet you list no examples.

"Trump empowers the KKK!" Except the KKK was started by Democrats. And nobody in their right mind supports Neo Nazis. Neo Nazis are also a small fraction of a minority in this country. They don't speak for anyone but themselves.

"You watch Faux News!" Okay yeah I do. And NBC. And CNN. Because its good to have an informed opinion from both sides since all news is biased in someway. Sounds like you should do the same.

"America is killing the World!!!" Okay please educate me on how.

"It's not my job to educate you!" Yeah and that's what I thought. All bark and nothing to back it up.

Lol. Thats cute. The KKK has been part of the right for over 30 years now. Cause here's the funny thing. Republicans became more conservative over time and Democrats became more liberal. All the Racist monsters joined up with the Republican party when they saw it was their new home and the tRump era has proven this. And sorry but truth isn't bias. You are a party of sociopaths killing children, destroying our country and our planet!
