I'm a big fan of John Cooper Clarkes stuff having seen him a couple of times over the years and buying all his books and he has inspired me to have a go myself, I've wrote some nothing too complicated for now, was just wondering if anyone else here has and if they'd be willing to share it.. anyway here goes
My cat's a prat
She meows when I try to catch her
For destroying my habitat
My cat's a pest
I can't control her, I've tried my best
She plucks up my carpet and ***** on the floor
And when I go to clean it up she runs for the door
My cat's a pain, she won't play with toys
I guess she's just too scared of making any noise
My cat's a bother, she follows me to sleep
But when I try to tickle her she won't make a peep
My sheets are covered in millions of cat hairs
And yet in the darkness she so proudly glares
My cat's a bother I have to feed her early
Cause if I don't she'll go into one and show her teeth all white and pearly
My cat's a blight, she doesn't like light
So in the house she remains on a windowsill at a height
For all the torment my cat gives me, she remains my friend
And will be until the very end.
Not poetry, no, not the proper stuff - I've never been able to engage with the medium really.
But I do quite enjoy writing little limericks for fun, once in a while. Here's one I've just made up to demonstrate:
There once was a chap in a cap
Leading a kart race lap after lap
But once he hit a banana
There followed much drama
And he finished the race at the back
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
There are many that say that the stuff John Cooper Clarke writes isn't 'proper' poetry but I respectfully disagree just cause he doesn't "skip around with a butterfly net" (his words) doesn't mean he cant speak directly to the heart of what moves a person.
