When was the last time Nintendo put out something like this, though?

I think Kid Icarus was the last game that was an overstretched tutorial since Palutena spent the whole game telling you what it is you had to do at every moment.

I've got a feeling I would hate King's Field IV.

Most people did. Look at its Metacritic rating. 60 from 14 reviews. Of course the user rating is 9.4 from 8 reviews, showing how small the community that likes it is. But they love the game.

Much like Pandora's Tower, really, the gameplay itself is pretty abstract and obscure. Most people found it asinine, but the raw atmosphere was so strong that a small group of people looked past the gameplay and saw something special in the game.

Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are far more straightforward and watered down. Which makes them better and more accessible games, but lesser experiences to the people who got hooked on King's Field IV.
