It isn't really necessary, but some games are able to play in progressive scan, with a widescreen display, or both, and it can only be done if you use a component cable. Check the back of the game box and it'll say if the game is compatible.

The games look amazing through the component. When I finally got an HDTV with component cables, I replayed alot of my GCN games to see how they looked. I was still impressed with GCN's graphics, even well after 7th generation was around, because HDTVs gave life to 6th generation that wasn't there before HDTVs were common.
