Topic: Game Storage Recommendations

With my rather large collection of video games I'm starting to think of a way to store them neatly and safely. Traditionally everything has just sat on a shelf, but unless the shelves are exactly the right height there's a lot of wasted space and they tend to get pretty dusty. Everything I own has its original case.

Does anybody have any clever ideas for game storage? I've got a mixture of things to store, including DS and SNES games, a whole bunch of Wii games and PC games (both in the DVD containers) and a lot of old 'big box' PC games.

I'd be quite happy for a good solution to everything but the big box PC games, since those are all shapes and sizes and may end up needing a shelf regardless. I don't really need things on display (in fact, I'd probably prefer if they weren't) so something like a drawer would be fine.

My criteria would be:

  • Prevent damage to the packaging (i.e. no tight squeezes etc.)
  • Economical use of space - nothing that can only fit 1 DVD case with a huge gap left over
  • Something that allows me to easily organise my games for easy retrieval.
  • Something fairly affordable.

Feel free to add some pictures of your solutions!

Dear god - you made we worry for my own games for a second there!
Looks over to my games - see's they're all sitting happily dusty on my shelves
Yeah....they're fine.

Honestly though I have no idea. Keep them in large plastic boxes maybe?

I do find that I tend to worry about the condition of my stuff more than most...

Boxes might be a reasonable idea, although they might not be as easy to access as some other options. I need something fairly compact as my wife won't want my stuff taking up heaps of room in the house, so I'll likely have to confine most of my things to a single room...

Oh, I should mention that I'd be happy for quite specific recommendations - e.g. if you've found something from IKEA that works perfectly then, by all means, let me know what the name is!

Get a shelf with a sliding door.

I think it's pretty tough to find one with the right depth - most shelves are quite deep so you waste space unless you have two rows of games, one in front of the other, which makes accessing the back row hard.

A bookshelf is quite ideal. They're the perfect size and depth to store most sizes of books, and since the size of game cases are usually akin to those of books if not smaller, it should be a perfect fit. And I'm sure you can find affordable bookshelves of various sizes, and they'd fit perfectly along a wall or in a corner - it's a great suggestion, in my opinion.

Well for me I have an entertainment center that holds my TV, Blu-ray player, satellite box and game consoles and also has shelves with glass doors which hold all my Wii, 360, PS2 games. My DS/3DS games I just keep in the CN 18 card holder case and the empty boxes I put in my closet so I dont have to carry around a bunch of DS/3DS games. As for my PC games I have a computer desk with cubbies on it that fit the DVD cases perfectly and the big box PC boxes I have in my closet.
