By "Cult classic," I mean a game that didn't do too well when it first came out, but over time more and more people found interest in it and made a substantial fanbase out of it. For me, it's Mother 3.
Mother 3 is a weird example, in that it did do well Japan but sold literally zero copies anywhere else. Which is what happens when you don't release it in other countries.
Since I don't count that at all, I'd probably go with the Ace Attorney series. Which is probably in contention for the most recognizable game that not a ton of people have actually played. But I don't know if its popularity has grown much past its initial release in 2005 or if largely the same people just keep buying every AA release, even the re-releases.
@kkslider5552000 Did Mother 3 actually do well in Japan? I always thought the Earthbound/ Mother series were sort of niche games. That's cool if it sold well, though.

Well, I just looked for some top cult classic games & apparently Planescape Torment is in there, so I'll put that ..... Beyond Good & Evil, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, Baldurs Gate & Neverwinter Nights Enhanced Editions
@BruceCM Yeah, definitley Planescape.
I'll put Sytem Shock 2, Excite-Botz, and Bushido Blade on my list.
Would also say Heavy Metal: Geomatrix on the Dreamcast, but I'm not sure it even has a cult following. More like forgotten gem.
I'm not sure if its reached cult classic status, but I love Rampart on snes. The two player versus mode is insanely fun, and best of all you get to make the loser walk the plank.
I think for me it was Terraria...
It was always kind of a niche game until a certain swedish YouTuber decided to make a video on it and gained immense popularity.
