I have to agree with @Moshugan. IMO, 64-bit polytgonal graphics are just ugly. From all the N64 games I've seen, only Kirby 64 and Paper Mario still look good today. The polygons were just too big, and the textures too pixelated. Also IMO, they should've waited until the Game Cube to do polygonal graphics, because at least graphics on that were not hard to look at. I find graphics on the Atari 2600 and the N64 very hard to look at. Most of the time, I don't really care much about the graphics, as long as they're easy on the eyes.
the N64 and PS1 era polgon games are obviously not the best to look at, but you have to remember at that time having games in 3D on your home tv was a big thing for gamers. going from 2D games to games with full 3D enviroments was a huge leap, where as now people whine if games don`t run in 1080p hd. moving from sd to hd just doesn`t have the same impact as what going from 2D to 3D did.
besides, if programmers didn`t have the experience programing 3D worlds for N64 or the PS1, it`s possible that some of the best looking games from the gamecube and PS2 might have looked far worse.
each gen of consoles will always be a learning experience for programers, but what they`ve learned from one gen they can carry over to the next gen, they don`t have to start from zero, because the knowledge is already there. to start at ground level making 3D games from gamecube gen in my opinion would have had a negative affect. where visuals are concerned.

I promise you at the time they were not hard to look at, at the time. I remember being amazed by them and think they looked great. I remember Virtua Fighter 1 being a jaw dropper and it really looks awful but for the time it was great.

Haha, thats kinda cheap @Morphtroid, coming up with a game that never came out.
Sure now they don't look god but back then they looked amazing. By that same token I'm sure in 20 years or so we'll be having the same conversations about current Gen. @Gioku Its funny you say that they should have stuck with 2D, apparently Sony US/UK had an anti-2D policy that kept some games from being released.
N64 still has games that look great to this day. Games like Waverace, Zelda, Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong, Excitebike, 1080, Mischief Makers and so on and so on. But my personal pick for best looking and from a technical standpoint most impressive game on the console is World Driver Championship. The texture models, lighting and audio are truly a remarkable feat on the N64. Boss Studios who made the game even made the cartridge over clock the n64's cpu to almost critical insanity to significantly increase polygon output. If you have never played or heard of this game and love technical aspects of games and consoles, find this game and check it out.
