Seeing as I'm still at school yeah. I was doing French and German but I got a D in German and an A in French and seeing as I'm in a Grammar School I'm expected to get A/A* Grades so I've kept French, dropped German and am now doing Spanish. I don't like learning them though, I wanna learn Japanese!
Keep picking up and dropping Japanese. Think I'm gonna pick it up again soon, don't have uni looming over me whispering quiet threats about deadlines and exams any more.

I've been trying to learn Japanese for the better part of a decade, but so far I've only learned a few words. My retention is very low unfortunately.
total immersion is the way to go IMO. If Rosetta Stone weren't so picky about the exact method of romanization (i learned differently, so it's a pain in the butt for me to switch), I'd say it's a great way to learn if you're really, truly serious about it. :3

Spanish, but only if you use the word "learning" verrrrry loosely. i have the worst spanish teacher ever
My first year Spanish teacher was bad, but between the simplicity of the concepts, fewer grammar exceptions than in English and the fact that when I got bored, I looked ahead at upcoming grammar ideas, I stuck with it and am now in AP Spanish Language, or the equivalent of 4th year Spanish at my school.

Agree with you 100 per cent. I wouldn't be able to speak Japanese if I didn't get the opportunity to every day.
i studied Japanese for two years in college in the U.S., and for 5 months at Rikkyo University in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. but that was 8 years ago now....i've forgotten quite a bit. I can still read and write all of the hiragana and katakana. at one point i could read/write about 200 kanji-i think i remember about 5 of them now. I'd love to get back into it but I don't know any local Japanese speakers I could talk to or anything like that.
