I'm feeling conflicted about buying a Wii U in 2020. I already have a Nintendo Switch, Nintendo 3DS, and Wii Mini (I had gotten it Christmas 2013 before I actually got into video games), so should I just go ahead and get a Wii U? If so, what games would be good for it (besides VC and excluding M-rated games)?

I'd be somewhat skeptical too, as it is in fact the inferior system to the Switch and 3DS. Not that I disliked the Wii U, but it's been surrounded by two of the absolute best systems of all time. My reasons for purchasing one would be:

  • It may be difficult to procure them over time due to low sales and the Gamepad not being easily/inexpensively replaceable if it breaks in anyway.
  • Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, and Mario Chase mini games in Nintendo Land. Those are some of the most special multiplayer games I've ever played.
  • Wii Sports Club.
  • DS, GBA, and N64 VC. NES Remix.
  • Windwaker HD remake, Pikmin 3, and Super Mario 3D World. (With all having some risk of being ported to the Switch down the road.)
  • Plays all your Wii games and won't require new controllers.

I know some people will mention that Wii U games will be far less expensive than on Switch if they have been ported ... I'd much rather have it on Switch for portability, potential to be backwards compatible with the next system, and occasional enhancements.

@megasean Thanks for your reasons! I agree with wanting the Switch versions of some Wii U games due to the benefit of portability and the occasional additions and enhancements, such as the Captain Toad DLC or Funky Mode in Tropical Freeze.

I would recommend getting one if you are interested in:

Virtual Console, as it seems increasingly unlikely that we are going to get GBA, N64, DS, TG-16 games on Switch anytime soon.

Multiplayer on the cheap - any old wiimote and classic contoller can be used on most games and all VC games. Just remember to assign the Gamepad to player 2, otherwise the system thinks that P1 is using a different controller to the gamepad and assigns the second controller to P1.Bizzare, but not an issue unless P1 is determined to play with the gamepad.

Still some decent exclusives that haven't been ported yet. Even if they have, Switch games are ridiculously expensive. The Wii U versions can be a fraction of the price and the performance is not really much different (at least to tide you over until the Switch version gets a discount).

Original Wii games run very well and look really great on the Wii U. The HDMI and a little bit of upscalling is very nice. You will notice a big difference compared to the Wii mini (which can only output 480i through composite).

Personally I have had a Wii U since 2014 and have recently got back into it. I have a Switch lite as well but I am more than happy playing the ported games on Wii U. Furthermore, the VC is very good. Not as extensive as the original Wii shop VC, but the save states functions, ability to remap buttons and the off tv play make up for it.

@Gamecuber Thanks for the suggestions! VC seems to be a big selling point for the Wii U.
