New here, so not sure if this has been suggested before, but I think it would be a nice addition to reviews to include approx battery usage / life for games.
So along with the conclusion and the score, can add usage / percentage after 1 hour, or how long a charge lasts in handheld on a particular game.
Have some controls in place like screen brightness at xx, wifi on, online play, etc.
I think it would be a nice metric to have along with the reviews.
I frequently use my Switch on flights (where they are increasingly not allowing the use of external batteries), so it would be interesting to know how much I may be able to play during that flight before running out of charge.
I did a 2.5 hr flight yesterday, exclusively playing Mario Kart World for the majority of the flight (maybe 2ish hours?)
By the time I landed it still had some juice left, but not much. I played at probably 70% brightness, all other settings as per factory standard (nb. I was in 'flight mode' of course)
I am a steamdeck owner though, so I am well versed in the art of battery expectations. Steamdeck would net me about 2-2.5hrs with 'intensive games'... but indies could get anywhere around 6-7 hrs.
I am not impressed with the battery life, but maybe it’s because I’m playing more intense games (and the Switch 1 battery was never that great to begin with). Hopefully, a power bank should fix the problem. Definitely hoping for an OLED upgrade with superior battery in the future, though.
A while back, I did a direct battery comparison between the Switch 2 and Switch OLED. I simply left both consoles on, in tabletop mode, with Joy-Con connected, at full brightness, on their main menus. Under these conditions, the Switch 2 had almost exactly half the battery life of my Switch OLED. On the main menu like this, the Switch 2 lasted approximately 4 hours, 5 minutes total, and while I didn't let the Switch OLED fully run down, given that it was at 55% when the Switch 2 died, I'd guess the battery life for the OLED would be approximately 8 hours, 15 minutes total. Again, remember that all of these times were recorded with the consoles simply on their main menu.
While I was surprised by this outcome at first, as I thought about it longer, it started to make more sense to me. The current Switch 2 is the very first model of the Switch 2 available, and if it gets the same treatment as the Switch 1 did, the Switch 2 will get a battery-life-improving revision a little bit down the line. On the other hand, the Switch OLED was not only the most improved, final model of the Switch, but it also used an OLED panel, and those are more power efficient than LCD's when on a dark screen. Given how everything I use is on dark mode... you can imagine how all these factors combined would lead to the Switch OLED having double the battery life of the Switch 2.
Basically, I expect that about a year from now, give or take, the Switch 2 will receive some kind of revision that has better battery life. Whether this be a lite, an OLED, or just a simple internal revision, I do think it'll happen. But as for now, the Switch 2 has, in my singular test, half the battery life of the Switch OLED.
I'd love to see this same test against a first model Switch...
