Stumbled across this on Zallard's (great Star Fox 64 player) YouTube channel:

Looks like there's a lot more depth to the scoring system than I thought. Maybe you all are aware of the intricacies of going for high scores, but it could be cool to explain Charged Unlocked Shots and other techniques to gamers who haven't seen it.

That or you could just show off this incredible video.

Thanks! Love the site!

I'm pretty sure it's not the OPs video, do I wouldn't think of it as advertising.

And it makes a reasonably valid point; NL have made articles covering pretty much every other point around the game, but we don't have one giving any advice on getting crazy high scores. This is crucial to unlocking all the medals, as well as one of the main attractions of replaying levels, so it would make sense to have an article covering it.

And as the video shows, there's certainly more to it than 'git gud'. A number of non-intuitive techniques are employed in order to maximise score, and these are worth drawing attention to.

I think the main one is the point about every enemy getting caught in the blast radius of a charge shot earning an extra point on top of the point earned simply for killing them. In standard gameplay, this usually is a result of locking onto a single enemy in a pack, and getting extra points for hitting all the surrounding enemies. However, in aiming slightly off target, you can often capture ALL the enemies in the blast radius and thus get an extra point for each of them.

In addition, not hitting them directly with a charge shot means that they are shoot out of the sky, but not actually destroyed, meaning you have a second change to score extra point by shooting them before they hit the ground (ala Duck Hunt), which can lead to yet more points.

To quantify things, if you have a pack of 3 enemies in close formation:

Shooting them each once individually with an uncharged laser earns 3 points.

Hitting the centre one with a charge shot and taking out the others in the blast radius earns 3+2=5 points.

Doing as above but then shooting the falling ships before they hit the ground earns 3+2+2=7 points.

Hitting the ground with a charge shot put taking them all out earns 3+3=6 points.

Doing as above but then shooting the falling ships before they hit the ground earns 3+3+3=9 points.

Which is triple what you'd get for just destroying them normally, which is significant.

In addition, the player in the video manages to score extra points on the end boss by taking out the turrets with the ships own homing missiles. There are quite a few examples of techniques to destroy things that bag extra points, and it would definitely make for a good article.

I think the only reason this would get locked in because it overlaps too heavily with the existing Star Fox thread, but it makes a good point, and I don't think it's guilty of self-advertising.

I think the rule is about just advertising Channels and Videos, not just self-owned channels and videos. I have seen threads get closed like this before, it was just a warning. OP could just post it in the Star Fox thread and be fine.
