Having to scroll past a full screen video interrupting the flow of reading, just to have the same ad keep playing shortly after for five more miles of scrolling is going too far.
The implementation is also done so poorly that it’s buggy, and the page reloads Going back to the top.
I saw the same crap at Eurogamer and it is 100% driving me off the sites to let YouTubers deliver anything remotely newsworthy in the game space.
I can’t be the only one thinking this. I understand the need for ads to keep the lights on, but not when it compromises usability.
@Filthy we've not changed anything with the ad setup recently, therefore I'm not quite sure what might be causing your issue. The page certainly shouldn't be reloading by itself. Perhaps you could send us a screen recording to [email protected] and we can investigate.
As for ads in general, we've always worked hard to create a balance and, generally speaking, have quite a light ad footprint compared to other sites. Without ads, the site wouldn't exist, and it's our primary source of income to pay our staff, myself included.
Additionally, we created an alternative for those who would prefer not to see ads and launched our supporter programme back in 2023 which gives an ad-free experience for a very reasonable price.
