Local Wireless. IR is built into the game cart (notice how the cart is BLACK like HeartGold and SoulSilver- games that used IR to communicate with the Pokewalker)

I'm pretty sure that IR just acts as a quick setup for a local wireless connection. Rather than going through the process of someone becoming the leader and then the other player(s) finding and joining their group you just point the IR carts at each other and bing connection established. After the initial IR connection it switches to wireless as normal.

If they can make the carts black, why can they not make the other cartridge white for Pokemon White? I mean they've done it since the GB and all... Kinda sad that they've stopped.

yeah I know this is an old issue since D/P also didn't have colored carts but still...

I'm not sure why they put in the IR while there's already wireless.

Good idea. I now demand Nintendo replace my cart with one made out of 24-carat diamond!

My guesses are:
A) You do things faster with it such as trading. (Or whatever you can do with it)
or
B) It in fact does use less battery life then wireless play.

It doesn't help when you post pictures of new pokemon I have never seen before. Ya know it just kind of ruins the game.
Also sure you can want a white game case but you would have no IR tech in it.

The cart is black because of the IR device inside it. I don't know the scientific details, but anything that emits an IR signal is always clear or black, I guess it makes the connection more reliable. Maybe black doesn't reflect the IR **shrugs**

I know that using IR does give you the option to select Pokemon out of your PC for trading not just the ones in your party. It also picks up people that you pass by and it takes their info (like street pass), but I do notice my battery does drain around twice as fast when my C-Gear is turned on.

Hah, awesome response. Sounds like something I would say. lol

If I'm that worried about ruining any part of a certain game though, I stay out of topics that having anything to do with said game. At least until this site adopts a spoiler code to hide things and enforces its usage.

Make that 147.

@Abgar, Its used to battle and trade. Similar to wireless but with inferred. I assume it makes things faster.

Is it like (IR= put the DSs so the IR ports can comunicate)
IR
Battle Begins
IR
Turn 1
IR
Turn 2
etc

lol I'm sorry...? Least you don't know their names
I didn't 'post' any picture to show what new Pokemon is in the game. It's cuz it's a Sea Turtle and I love turtles. And it happens to be my favorite Pokemon this gen.

As I said earlier, after the initial connection the IR is not used, normal wireless it. IR just acts as a quick way of setting up a wireless connection: rather than the lead player creating a group and the other player finding and joining it, you just point the two DSes at each other and the connection is instantly established. It's just a way of trading or battling instantly and outside of a Pokemon Center.
