The SD card is gradually getting more and more usefull with apps like Flipnote studio using it as well as storing pics and music on it you can also "back up" DSiware games onto it. Not play them off the SD card however. If you get hold of some M4a music files the SD card lets you have a lot of fun with the "Nintendo DSi Sound" channel including a mario mini game.
As far as your 1000 points, the best way to go is either get a Premium game and a cheap 200 point game app that you will use or you could settle for two 500 point games but it is all down to what you are intersted in - Premium Games I would recommend are Asphalt 4 or Mario vs. Donkey Kong and for your 200 points you could either get the Mario Clock (which includes a mario mini game built in), Sudoku 50! or Pyoro (bird and beans) As far as 2 500 point games go I would recomend you get A little bit of Dr.Mario and Sujin Taisen Number Battles (whcih has online multiplayer as well as a good story mode)
hope this helps...
oh and make sure you download your Free internet Browser and Flipnote Studio.

Pictopict should be top of your list. Mario v DK, Boxlife or Pop Plus Solo are worth considering as well. If you have 200 points left over, get paper plane.
For the 1000 points, maybe a nice Premium game to go along with a 200-point title or if you're a puzzle guy, the Art Style games in the 500 point category will do you justice.

Raptor pretty much nailed it. Game combos I'd recommend (in order of awesomeness):
1. Art Styles PiCTOBiTS and precipice (500 points each)
2. Asphalt 4: Elite Racing, Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again!, or Mighty Flip Champs and save 200 points for Flipper as there aren't any great 200 point games atm (the first three games are 800 points)
3. Art Style precipice and Pop+ Solo (500 points each)
4. Art Style PiCTOBiTS and Pop+ Solo (500 points each)
5. Art Style precipice and Dr. Mario Express (500 points each)
6. Art Style PiCTOBiTS and Dr. Mario Express (500 points each)
7. Dr. Mario Express and Pop+ Solo (500 points each)
Unfortunately those are all of the decent 1,000 point game combos I can recommend to you right now.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys I will definately pick up an SD card then. And I decided to get Mario v Donkey kong and paper airplane
For your first DSiware experience I think you will find that MvDK was a good choice, free user generated DLC means that this game has unlimited replayability which is good if you dont get the chance to get Nintendo Points that much.

Aw, Kizzi, you were supposed to get PiCTOBiTS, the REAL best DSiWare game! And for crying out loud, if you MUST get an 800 point and a 200 point title, at least get Bird & Beans instead of Paper Plane! The latter is really not very good. I got it and was highly disappointed.
My Backloggery Updated sporadically. Got my important online ID's on there, anyway. :P
nooooooo, the best 500 point game you can download is Suujin Taisen it has a good Single player Story mode as well as a Puzzle node and a great wifi multiplayer mode. Infact after player the Japanese original version (there isnt an english retail version) I found that there was very little difference between the retail and DSiware version aside from the multiplayer single cart download game on the retail.
