I could pick a good Resident Evil... but not a DS game that a young girl could enjoy

The game should not be text heavy or feature complex mechanics... Ideally, it would be a half-decent (or atleast not terrible) game too

With the handheld being popular with little girls, I'm sure there must be something out there, can you guys help me seperate the Bratz from the Princess Peaches?

Have you tried any of the Imagine (insert career)z series, (insert animal) petz series or zhu zhu pets?
Or maybe a disney game? you have everything from pop stars to princesses with disney.

Im sure there is also a good number of DSiWare a 3 years old girl would enjoy.

why not sit down and actually go through a list of games with your little girl to see what interests her? you can speculate until the cows come home regarding what a little girl (or boy) will want to play, and what they actually spend the most time with may still wind up surprising you.

Unfortunately, this little girl lives a couple of hundred miles away, so sitting down with her isnt an option (fortunately though, she isnt my daughter - what kind of bad parent do you take me for TBD !!!???) and with there being no magazine reviews for these kind of games, I'm hoping some Nintendo fans with siblings of thir own could point me in the right direction.

So yeah thanks Zezhyrule and abgar, I'll take a look at those series - looks a good place to start.

And I did consider Mario Bros for a minute or two yoyogamer, but I reckon the difficulty will be too punishing for such a young child

I think Mortal Kombat would be better suited than a CoD game Sonic!

@TimSlim: I wasn't accusing you of being a bad parent, i was cautioning you away from making assumptions regarding the tastes of a little girl. so many people push their kids to do, play, or be one set of things when their kids would rather be doing, playing, or being something else entirely. :/

New Super Mario Bros. is an excellent game for younger audiences. It's easy for a Mario game and fun to pick up and play. My young cousins all have it and love it. She might need some parental assistance, though.

I'm back (for the moment)!

From my experiance when I was young like 3 or 4 ish I could play normal games just fine, of course sometimes I'd get hopelessly stuck, die quite often and get frustrated to the point of begging the game to let me win but it was all good. I had tons of fun playing and when I did get stuck I'd just start the game over and play til I'm stuck again. As long as it was a video game it could do no wrong. I suggest NSMB it's really easy and fun, much better than dumbed down shovelware. xP Also, Nintendogs is a good one.

Also... "why not sit down and actually go through a list of games with the little girl to see what interests her" <--- This is the best advice here, ask and you'll find out.

How about Super Princess Peach?

This game is nice and easy (for the first playthrough), it's sure to please any young girl. There isn't too much text, but as an unlockable bonus, there are special conversations that give you more information on a certain characters past.
Since it's unlockable, she won't need to read any of it to play the game.

The gamer in me really wants to get her a proper Nintendo game... but it does worry me that if the game is too difficult or too complex in mechanics, she just wont enjoy it. Because of this, I'm thinking that she'd get more out of some shovelware, so to speak.

I'd be grateful to hear more comments from people who have seen 3+ year olds play Mario et al... can they really enjoy it?

Maybe something like Super Scribblenauts? Creativity + enhanced vocabulary = success

Don't understimate kids.
My first game was pokemon, i was six and had zero english skills, yet i learned to play rather quickly (actually i was so stuck on my first play that i already had a lvl 40 pokemon before the second gym and i don't remember getting frustrated at all) . I am not saying that you should buy her a JRPG or something, but the younger one is the faster one learns.

I'm sure she will enjoy any of the games mentioned here.

Does she Like Sesame Street? My brother is almost 4, and he loves Elmo's A to Zoo Adventure and Cookie Monster's Counting Carnival. The games are full of mini games that teach shapes, numbers, letters, etc. The game instructions are spoken, so no reading is required to enjoy the game. Each game also comes with a big stylus that's easy to hold onto.

I have a friend whose kid just turned 3. He's been in love with Yoshi since he was probably one and a half and we gave him a yoshi plushie.
They decided pulling out Super Mario World might be fun for him since you can get Yoshi in it. He's been able to sort of figure out the controls a bit. He seems to sort of understand the concept of using two buttons at once but in the end its timing that's getting him frustrated since he keeps losing Yoshi when he runs into any of the baddies.
As a result he seems much more content to watch the game being played and trying to tell whoever is playing which way to go...
I don't think they've tried him on a DS yet though... so I can't comment on how that might differ for controls.

A lot of the abovementioned games may be a tad too difficult for a girl of only 3 years. The Nintendogs games would be perfect for children as there is virtually no learning curve, the pets can't die, and the pets are all beautifully animated. If the little girl has a 2DS or a 3DS, then perhaps you should consider Nintendogs + Cats instead. There are at least 5 Nintendogs games for the DS and they are all identical in terms of gameplay, so I wouldn't bother buying more than one of them. The only difference between them is the selection of dogs that are available at the start of the game (though they will all be available eventually). Likewise, there are 3 for the 3DS.
