Arc Style: Solitaire - Despite the scathing review NL gave it, I took a gamble on it, and I liked it. True, it's nothing fancy, but it promises Solitaire & it gives Solitaire, so that's a win in my book. The controls (both button & touch) worked fine, and I have absolutely no idea how the reviewer came to the conclusion they were "broken". I think it was a case of them taking a small game no one was looking forward to, and decided to trash it in a humorously bad review to get more attention.
Mario's Picross - I'm normally not much of a puzzle game fan, but when I got this (from Club Nintendo) I was pleasantly surprised, & now love picross. Currently playing through Picross e.
Bugs VS Tanks - Despite the middling reviews, I decided to pick this up during the Level 5 sale, and am glad I did. It does have it's flaws, but I found it to be good fun, and loved the amount of content.
the Sword of Hope II - I wasn't sure of this because of it's age, but it turned out to be quite a fun RPG.
3D Classics: Twinbee - I don't dislike Shumps, but I usually don't get them because I'm not very good at them, but I got this through Club Nintendo, and really enjoyed it (I even got through all the stages).
Samurai Warriors: Chronicles - Despite the negative reputation of the franchise, this was actually my favorite launch title (even over SSFIV3D). Yes, it's a bit repetitive to be sure, but I love as playing as all the different characters, and it's good if you just want to relax with some mindless action.
Negative surprises:
Mutant Mudds - This isn't a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, but after all the praise it got, I was surprised to find it was merely good, instead of great. It does make fantastic use of 3D, the soundtrack is catchy (though this is equally true for many of the retro inspired eShop games out there), and it has a boatload of content, but the actual gameplay (while good) is standard stuff that doesn't do anything unique or standout, it's very cliché, and it's art style does NOT look convincingly retro (it looks too laminated or plastic-like. VVVVVV, Cave Story, & Mighty Switch Force! all look more retro).
Kid Icarus: Uprising - Again, THIS IS NOT A BAD GAME! In fact, there was so much love poured into it, I'd say it's fantastic. Despite that, as a lefty, was surprised to find I couldn't play it for long sessions, and because of that, I don't return to it often
Gunman Clive surprised me and was an interesting little game. I also liked LM:Dark Moon more than I expected(been forever since the original so it was a nice surprise anyway).
The Golden Sun Series reason the music and the gameplay and some of the puzzles really has you thinking.
This.(Btw, waiting on 3DS sequel to Dark Dawn!)
The music is amazing and both original games had a great amount of depth(especially The Lost Age), considering what they were released on, the Gameboy Advance.
Had I not received the first game randomly from my cousin on my birthday years ago, I probably never would have even known of it. When I first looked at the cart and turned the game on to start playing, it honestly didn't look like it'd be my kind of game at the time. Luckily, I also had little else to play then(had finished most of what I had for GC) so that allowed me to get into it.
One of my favorite game series and I've probably played them over a bazillion times.
I had heard about it before, but I never got around to buying it. I got more interested in it after playing Kingdom Hearts 3D. About a week after I beat Kingdom Hearts 3D, I got TWEWY along with WarioWare D.I.Y. from GameStop.
It blew me away.
I loved everything about it. The gameplay, the music, the story... I didn't expect to like the game so much.
It's easily tied with Sonic 3 & Knuckles for my all-time favorite video game.
Quite a number of games surprised me over the years, So I'll just list the first five that comes to mind.
Animal Crossing for Gamecube: beside the NES games, using realtime and real holidays for a life simulation games was a big shock to me at the time. Samurai Warriors 3 for Wii: I didn't get it at first because of all the negative reviews and I played Soul Calibur Legend so I thought it was similar. But after watching Nintendo Week a year after the game's release and seeing the main story mode have local co-op, I figure it would be a ok game to play with my girlfriend. Long story short, that was the last time I ever went to IGN.com Pokemon Conquest: Never thought it would be release overseas. Project X Zone: Same as above. Senran Kagura Burst: ^
A dying animal struggles, thrashes and howls in protest as its life torn from it. To see this in action, watch Animal Planet. The same thing happens when a video game is or isn't released. To see this in action, stay here.

Positively:
Donkey Kong Country Returns: was alot better than I ever expected
F-Zero (SNES): Not a fan of Maximum Velocity, but the original was way better
Rhythm Thief: I wasn't a big fan of the middle part of the game. It was boring, and I couldn't have cared less. However, the game completely redeemed itself towards the final chapter, everything started looking better, the music was getting alot more rememberable and made me very satisfied towards the end.
Zero Escape Virtue's Last Reward: It has so much gripping content. Just turn off the lights, get some headphones and enjoy everything about the game. 999 was great, but Virtue's Last Reward 1ups it in every way, and that's tough.
Negatively:
Subspace Emissary: I thought it was more linear. And it's also surprisingly bland for a smash bros game.
Epic Mickey: Another one I thought would be more linear. Still a nice platformer.
