I'm in Australia and I'm using a NTSC 3DS. I plan on getting a second DS, for which the majority of games will be purchased through the eShop. I recently switched my region from Mexico to USA, California, and the price of "Fire Emblem: Awakening" changed from 799 Mexican Peso ($66 US) to $39.99 US
If anyone has a PAL 3DS, could they tell me how much "Fire Emblem: Awakening" (as a reference point) is in the eShop? Checking both UK and AU regional settings to check the difference would be muchly appreciated.
I feel like an idiot for buying Star Fox 64 at 699 Peso, which is $57.50 US (My credit card doesn't work when the region is set to USA, and I read somewhere that Mexico/Brazil was a good region to set it to to fix the problem, and I believed it without checking)
I'm gonna test a few other region settings to see what's the best deal.
Brazil: R$ 149,90 for Fire Emblem, which is equivalent to $74.50 US. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell are both worth R$ 179,90 ($89.50 US)
so you're really better off just sticking to your US 3DS if you are just going to stick to downloads.
Well the problem here is you can't add funds to a NTSC 3DS set to USA region with a non-American credit card.
Just switched region to Canada and I'm being asked for my province before I can even enter the store so they can "calculate sales tax" and also my DoB, wtf?
Canada - Quebec: $39.99 CD, which is $39.79 US, cheaper than the US store ^_^ gotta check now if the add funds works.
International Orders
If you have a non-US billing address, you have two options when placing an order on BestBuy.com:
Have your order shipped to a US mailing address. This includes states within the United States, the US Virgin Islands, Guam, and APO/FPO (military) addresses.
Pick up your order at any US store. You can also designate someone else to pick up your order in the United States.
I feel bad for people with Peru or Guatemala as their region code. The store has nothing in it except for Mario Kart Update and Swapnote.
Ah, found a method of getting money onto the United States region: I buy a virtual eShop code here with my credit card, which I then proceed to redeem in the eShop. That way I only need to pay a 7-15% fee (instead of the 65% markup that the Mexican region hits me with) and at the same time I earn coins for a Club Nintendo account. (Although it does mean I have to enter my payment details into a third party website)
Well, most dsiware and 3ds downloads are a few cents cheaper in pesos... And that retail hello kitty game went from 19 dollars to 19 pesos in mexico (that's less than 2 dollars)... I wish other games had that pricing error!
Really, the only company that gives their retail games HUGE prices in mexico is Nintendo itself, which is why I never buy their games through the eshop. Most other companies, like atlus and natsume, are actually pretty fair with their prices.

Oh. That makes sense. The Mexican small games start at 24.99 Pesos ($2.07 US) and go from that to something like 45, 65, 96, 125, 180. Retail games are like 599, 699, and 799 Pesos.
Right now I'm juggling prices between Amazon.com, that Gift Card method I just mentioned, and the original way I went about it with adding Pesos to my account.
Amazon is being a little tricky at the moment, a lot of the shipping companies don't ship popular games to Australia, so I just have to go to the shipping list and click add to cart, add to cart, add to cart, add to cart, add to cart, add to cart, on like 8 different ones, proceed to checkout and remove the ones that say they can't be shipped. It's worth it though, beats paying 60-70 bucks on games in JB-Hifi/Dicksmith/EBgames/Big W
I think it would possibly be cheaper. I just had a look on Amazon, the animal crossing pre-order is $34.99 US, however, I am forced to pay 12 to 17 US dollars in shipping costs . In the United States eShop it's 34.99, but I can't buy that unless I use a code purchased online - a $35 card for $38 US. In the Mexican eShop, I'm assuming it would be at least 599 Peso, which is $49.75 US. The former two I earn coins for on Club Nintendo.
In this case, the online code method is the cheapest way to do it.

Btw, just did a bunch of conversions, and it turns out most Brazilian eShop items are 50 cents cheaper than the United States eShop Including the 1.99 items (They're 2,99 Reals, which is 1.49 US )

Most third party titles go lower, almost a direct translation of the US price+taxes, some go even lower than that, some round them up to the closest 99.99. And sometimes could swear I have seen some prices go up unexpectedly one or two days after release, but I can't confirm it.

Yeah I've noticed this. The main reason for me getting a NTSC 3DS is because I was sick of seeing all the DS and 3DS games going for 50-70 dollars in the only Big W store within a 70 kilometer radius of where I live.
New Leaf's price is still TBD in both Mexican and Brazillian eShops, while being 34.99 in the US one, and I'm fairly sure they're gonna follow suit and be set to a high price like the rest of the games.
I'm wondering if people with their PAL 3DS's set to Australia as their region (can all PAL 3DS switch between UK and AUS?) are gibbed when it comes to eShop selection/price? (Another reason why NTSC looked like a good choice)
