@FriedSquid Mostly because you can't "target" pokemon when you use items. They're either just used randomly, or used at your party screen. Its only because they lack the technology for some reason.
The only time this was available was in generation 3, Colosseum and XD but they put a lot more focus and emphasis on the double battle format for those games while this gen they probably figured it highly centralized around singles, and doubles would mostly be an online only experience.
Infact, double battles were never a thing in-game for pokemon hunts since those two games, the only time you'd encounter more than one was if you were partnered with a character in gen 4 (two points in the game), on a rather rare occasion in gen 5, or horde battles in generation 6 which were never a big deal.
Since Gen 7 pretty much copied gen 6's coding, its likely they just never bothered to add it or expected it to be such a big deal.
Gen 7 is the only time where doubles is cancer, since you can't control the length of the battle, or flawlessly solo out a pokemon and catch it, its never a 1v1 to catch pokemon, it's always 1v10 or more for all you know just to simply catch a single one. They really just need to remove SOSing entirely, period, don't even add it in a gen 7 sequel. In fact patch it out of this game. Its so awful... it literally feels like the generation was ruined by SOS battles alone.
Or they should've at least gave us an adrenaline orb counterpart that prevents pokemon from being called.
The game kind of morally blackmailed me into adding it to my team... So I did just that. It will be part of the team for the league. (Replacing Shiinotic).
Quite conveniently, it's exactly the same level as all my other pokemon, so it's not like it gives me more of an advantage or anything.
My copy of Pokemon Sun must of been near a 4 leaf clover or something
Tauros 5 percent chance at Paniola Ranch get him on 6th or 7th encounter
Bagon 1 percent chance at Route 3 took me maybe 30 minutes to find
Trying to find the more common Pokemon at 40 percent encounter rate and i keep getting the 10 percent Pokemon
Lets see if i can keep this good luck going and get a Miltank in the next 10 minutes
Not bad 30 minutes was a bit of a pain got it paralyzed started using hold back but Miltank kept using Milk Drink i landed a critical hit and for whatever reason Miltank started using Growl or Defense Curl took 10 great balls
Just beat the game's main story and I can see why Sun/Moon sold so well. It certainly deserves the sales, Gen 7 ties with Gen 5 as my favourite Generation. The story and presentation was top notch and the little attention to details adds to the enjoyment, the ending also really got to me... Game's not easy either, I more or less powered through X/Y and OR/AS but there were plenty of times in Moon where just using super-effective moves wouldn't cut it, mainly is the case of the Totems. So I got to play more strategically and it was more satisfying to win that way.
Only real issues I had and still have were SOS battles or rather, the SOS mechanic in general. They're fine with the Totem Pokémon, it's part of what makes them challenging, but not when I'm trying to catch a wild Pokémon.
With the Gen 6 games, I got bored during the post-game and ended up fatigued of Pokémon; but I really like Moon. I hope the game can keep my interest.
Once a LuigiMan, now a Dreamy representation of the Goddess of Nature.

I find the post game pretty slow/disappointing tbh.
After the "missions" for the ultra beast, there really isn't much else to do. There is no dexnaving for new methods to shiny hunt, SOSing is just the poor man's masuda method, and there isn't any additional features/places to go do to spice up your play time (contest halls particularly.)
For example, if you're in the car and hopefully not the driver, you'd likely be breeding, chaining for shinies, playing contest hall, doing super training minigames, soft resetting for shiny legendaries, etc. In sun and moon, there are no nonshiny locked legends, super training is dead, there is no chaining methods and chain fishing isn't great this gen at all, and the royal dome replaced contest halls, which is more for a BP grind like battle maison, and everybody luuuuvvvss battle maison.
So really, the replayability and post game experience is... I'm really going to start some debates here, worse than x/y
There's nothing particularly social about the games, at least in X/Y you have an excuse to going finding people for friend safari as you have increased shiny odds, while also having hyper training as a small activity which I found myself always competitive enough to beat my high scores adding some interest. Horde battles added another way to shiny hunt so if you got bored of one method, there were still others adding a little bit of a mix.
Sun and Moon there is only 2 ways to shiny hunt, and 1 of them is outclassed by the other, and there is no mysterious friend safari to see what you can find. Even some of the important items can be found laying around so you don't have to grind for them.
Sun and Moon post game, is all breeding and online experience. The more I run around with tauros hatching eggs I just remind myself "this is all I really have to do...".
Sun and Moon had a beautiful story, a very well done one that a lot of us wouldn't expect GF even being capable of, the soundtrack is really good as well, and the scenery is amazing for the 3ds's graphical limitations/pokemon standards (all NPCs have moving mouths when they talk, on the new XL 3DS, you can't see their mouths at all even moving because of the pixelated outlines). However, after their very long and well done story, just like a story book, the game comes to a close and you know everything and have done everything you needed to do.
But remember, according to Masuda, the fans wouldn't appreciate a Frontier. I still think Trials should've been more Frontier like.
I think that reasoning is BS. No one, hardcore and especially not casual likes the Maison. So, if that's a complete dud, why not have a half-dud (In that casuals wont like it), by having a Battle Tower and more facilities. Some of them may be appealing. I always remember enjoying the Battle Pyramid and especially the Battle Factory.
But no. Casual fans wont appreciate it. So we get the battle Maison. Which no one appreciates.
Game Freak is...so adamant on taking what good ideas they had in one game, and never doing it again. Seasons for instance? Apparently Unova is the only region to be affected by the Earth's rotation. Difficlty selects? Battle Frontier? I don't get their thought proceses. They bring more bad things forward than good sadly. Do you remember Horde Battles? Yeah, they are back in a way and it suuuucks. Horde trainers? Nope, screw that concept.

GF always saw battle facilities including the frontier the same as facilities like the maison and battle tree. The battle tree is just a cheap remake of the maison, and the maison is just a cheap place to grind at.
They don't want to put too much coding into "improving" maison/tree to be like a real battle frontier as they figured it'd be pointless long term and too much effort to actually do. They see how we really don't care for maison, so they figure we'd really not care for frontier and upgrading would be a waste of time.
They haven't caught on we don't care for the Maison (ESPECIALLY the Maison, that place is both boring, like Kalos, and cheap as hell!) because it's so poorly done. One thing it brought that I like is BP per battle not per streak. We don't care for the Maison. We would care for the options of a Frontier. Even just 5 places like in Generation 4, or something like the Battle Subway and Pokémon World Tournament combo in B2/W2, alongside White Treehollow/Black Tower. That was variety and fun. The Maison just....ugh. XY were bad games, I've been saying that for years and I always used to be lynched for it XD
