Hey everyone,

I bought one of the Animal crossing new 3dsXLs off Ebay but it came with a busted screen, it's not unusable but it is unpleasant. I've booked in an official repair with Nintendo UK but on reddit I've seen some horror stories about the service, I know people are more likely to complain than say they've had a great service though.

Has any of the fine denizens ever used the service in the UK, if so how much did it cost you and am I making a huge mistake (Like Gob in arrested development).

Thanks everyone

I had sent in my Wii U Gamepad to them a couple of years ago, funnily enough, for stick drifting issues. They wanted £56 to fix it. I think the whole process took a month altogether, but ultimately not had any issues barring the price.

Signature, huh? Where do I sign?

@MS7000 Thanks Mate, thats good to hear, oh god imagine if the WiiU gamepad had extensive drift issues that really would have been a disaster.

It's good to hear that you had a good experience though, I know places like Cex do repairs but I'd prefer to go official if possible.

@MS7000 What they did with my Wii U GamePad was replace the entire thing (I sent it in for broken sticks and buttons I think, flat out not functioning) and I lost my matte skin cover. :/

I would repair your 3DS yourself if I were you. That way you have 0 chance of losing your data, because I imagine that's what would happen. Or go with a 3rd party like CeX or a local repair shop if you have one.

@Lukandon Ooh, I would of loved a brand new GamePad. The stick was new on my controller, but otherwise, definitely the same one based on a small scratch that was on the back of my GamePad. Talking about this though has reminded me that I need to find a replacement battery from somewhere for it. Holds about 10 minutes of charge now.

@Lukandon The Data point would definitely be a point to consider but this was a back up system/system I may have made into my main system. I've been using the smaller new 3ds model as my main console ever since the paint started peeling on my Majora's Mask unit. So all my data will be safe and sound at home with me

@Lukandon Yup I think it was due to the Medusa fight in SMTIV haha and it came off right where I would put my sweaty mits

Depending on the Unit I have seen some replacement shells on sites like Alibaba, unfortunately the paint that they used on the glossy special edition consoles was a poor choice and it's a pretty widespread issue.

@Lukandon ahh that’s such a shame as it’s a really nice 3ds I really liked the blue that they used on it.

Well it looks like Nintendo found a fault I wasn't aware of so they said they would replace the whole unit, which is a really great end to this story, hopefully it's not a 2ds that arrives back haha.

Hiya, my blue new 3ds xl has managed to get a whole bunch of dead pixels on the top screen and I’m not brave enough to try replacimg the screen myself. What was the outcome of sending it to Nintendo? Otherwise where else can I go and what should I expect to pay?

I honestly think retro repair shops would be a good way to bring footfall to failing towns as its a rare service to get fix while you wait these days

Say if hanley sot had one it would also bring non locals to the potteries centre

@D20Nat20 I doubt its mainstream enough to actually make any money to be honest, not even as a service in a Retro games shop - there's a reason it's rare! Even online, most places I've seen offering repairs do other stuff as well - like modding etc and they're not going to have the extra costs of renting space on the high street.

With the exception of CEX, there aren't many places on most UK high streets that even sell retro games any more, never mind repairs. I was in Glasgow the other week, and it's apparently the second most visited place for shopping in the UK behind London. With the exception of the 3 CEX stores, I couldn't find a single shop selling retro games. Google couldn't find any in the area either. I just can't see how it would be a viable business, especially on the high street.

I've repaired the top screen myself before but it isn't easy. A random guy on Reddit from Greece after chatting about it and being told by someone it was impossible, ended up sending me his 3DS all the way to London, I repaired it and sent it back. If you do plan to do this repair yourself do lots of research first, watch some videos, buy the right tools etc. The screen itself doesn't cost alot but even with experience fixing phones and other consoles, doing a 3DS top screen for the first time took me a while!

Admitably you'd need to build up a good buisness first with a unique angle like how alot of war gamming stores now sell refreshments to keep you in store
