If the exterior seems OK, the best things you can do are -

1) Obviously make sure the machine turns on and both screens are clean and clear with no scratches, dead-pixels or other obvious problems.

2) Test the touchscreen - there is a calibration option in Settings or move/touch around menu screen

3) Test the circle pad - there is a calibration option in settings or move around menu screen.

4) Test all buttons. I would especially check the shoulder buttons - these seem to be the ones that either wear out first or get damaged (by dropping/knocking etc.) Use a gamecard that uses all buttons or use L+R on menu screen to activate the camera. If it requires multiple presses, then their ma be a problem with the shoulder buttons. Activate the menus.

5) Test the D-Pad. Just move around on the menu screen.

6) Pop in and eject a game card (if possible). They should go in easily and lock in place with a nice click. Press the card again to eject. If the card doesn't lock or eject then reject the machine.

7) Some people are very vocal about certain types of screen on the 3DS - there are two main types, one allegedly gives a clearer view of the screen at a greater angle/distance from the machine. I have 3x 3DSs (and a 2DS) and there's really not that much difference between them IMHO, especially if you're looking dead on (as you should be) while playing.

8) Try to test Wi-Fi if possible.

9) Listen to some music. It should be clear and not scratchy/poppy/clicky. Check the Settings menu - that has a small piece of music that plays when you highlight it.

That covers most of the obvious issues. Of course, it's impossible to test everything in a short space of time and even new machines can be DOA or have issues.

Why would you buy your boyfriend a used one? If I was you I'd buy a brandnew 3DS.

Only buy used from a reputable source. Ebay covers you if the item is incorrectly described, so just find a very good condition one on ebay and make sure the seller confirms in writing that it works perfectly.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.
