Topic: Looking for some info on the Yo-kai Watch series

I've been hearing people recommending that I get the Yo-Kai Watch games from the Eshop before it closes, but I don't know too much about the series. I have the first game, but I haven't gotten to far into it. I would say that I'm a little off put by the battle system, but I've been wanting to give it another chance actually. I might like it if I understand it better. I was playing a lot of Pokemon Y or Sun at the time, so I picked up Yo-kai Watch thinking it would be another cool monster catcher/recruiter.

I'm seeing 3 versions of 2, with Psychic going for a bit on cart while the other 2 are reasonable. I'm also seeing that 3 is way too expensive on cart, but 1 version. Then finially I'm seeing 2 versions of Blasters which are expensive on cart as well but not as much as 3. I also downloaded a demo of 2 Bony Spirits(?), but haven't seen demos for anything other than possibly the first game.

Could someone explain how all this works and which games to look into?

@HeavyMetalWario64DS This is going to be a bit long so brace yourself:

  • Make a new save file on 1 to see whether you like the battle system or not (I feel like you will though).
  • Once you've finished 1, I would pick up Psychic Specters next. It's a bit more expensive but it has much more post game content than the other 2 companion games, Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls. It also has a higher emphasis on story so take that for what you will. WORD OF WARNING: There is a massive difficulty spike at the end of the main story so make sure beforehand you've levelled up enough and have as many heals as possible.
  • I haven't played 3 myself personally since it came out after I had moved on to the Switch, but it is labelled as the best in the trilogy so if you're unsure, play the first 2 beforehand or read/watch a review on it.

Hope this helped you out!

@NinChocolate Never played them, I assume it's just a real time ghost busting spin-off.

I have played a lot of Yokai Watch 3 Tempura Japanese version since I bought the game last year and it was my favorite Yokai games on 3DS as it has a lot of Yokai to get including the USA Yokai that have more modern looking and more appealing to me. The battle system of Yokai Watch 3 games are different than Pokemon games as you cannot give direct command to your Yokai like Pokemon games, instead they will automatically attack the enemies during battle but you can control their command behavior by give them specific book outside the battle to make them have different tendency. For example, you can make your Yokai become attacker (mostly pummeling with physical attack) when you give them books that changed their behaviour into Grouchy or make your Yokai become healer by give them books that changed their behavior into Gentle (Oftenly heal your Yokai when their HP is low). Kinda like Paradigm Shift FF XIII which Attack type = Commando, Technique type = Ravager, Inspirit = Synergist / Saboteur, Defensive behavior = Sentinel. Their current behavior will determine the stats that get bonus upgrade when leveling up.

There are a lot of Yokai games on 3DS including the exclusive Japanese version due to low popularity.
Yokai Watch 1 is the beginning of Nate to meet Yokai and Yokai world. The game just only have 1 version.
Yokai Watch 2 is the continuation from previous game, the theme is about time travelling in the past and meet the grandpa of Nate when he was kid. The game have 2 version at the first launch to copy Pokemon games style with two version then the Spectre version added later as the third version, kinda like Pokemon Platinum.
Yokai Watch 3 is the continuation from the second game where Nate's dad got promoted to work in USA and they have to moved to USA and meet with Mexican Yokai. There are a lot of references from iconic things from USA that being used for Yokai Watch 3 such as Thomas Alva Edison, Superhero, Indiana Jaws, Steve Jaws, Yopple Inc (Yokai Watch version of Apple company), etc. There are some Merican variant of Yokai in the third game from the same Yokai, kinda like Alola or Galar form Pokemon but you can change the Yokai into Merican Yokai by combine them with USA powder. The game has 3 version in Japan (Sushi, Tempura and Sukiyaki. Sukiyaki was added later, same as Psychic Spectre) but only 1 version for USA and PAL version (based on Sukiyaki version)
Yokai Watch Blasters is the spin off of Yokai Watch games with Rogue like gameplay style which you can directly attack the enemies, following by your team get into the fight and you can switch the leader anytime. There are 4 different type of Yokai based on their attack type: Attacker (good in attacking enemies), Tanker (good in guarding the team from attack), Healer (good in healing) and Ranger (use inspirit or ranged attack style). The game have 3 version in Japan (Red Cat Corps, White Dog Squad, Moon Rabbit Crew) but only have 2 version for USA and PAL version (Red Cat and White Dog) while the Moon Rabbit English version added as additional version for USA and PAL version via updates.
Yokai Watch Busters 2 is the sequel of Yokai Watch Blasters with more Yokai from Yokai Watch 2 and 3. The games have 2 version (Magnum and Sword) and exclusive for Japan.
Yokai Sangokushi is a tactic RPG style of Yokai Watch games with Sangokushi theme. The game only have 1 version and exclusive to Japan.

Well, my suggestion is get Yokai Watch 1 - 3 any version to enjoy the whole story of Nate Adams as 11 years old boy in Yokai world adventure. My favorite is Yokai Watch 3 as it has better gameplay than the previous games.
Yokai Watch Blasters was okay but kinda repetitive.
Just give another chance for Yokai Watch 1 - 3, better you play from the first game to understand the adventure of Nate Adams in Yokai World. The gameplay of Yokai Watch games are more interesting than Pokemon games in my opinion as you have 3 vs 3 battle instead of 1 vs 1 Pokemon style which at least there is one Yokai can heal or support your team. Yokai Watch games are not turn based style so better watch over your Yokai team behavior.

@Snatcher
Too late.
3DS eshop will be discontinued on next year, no chance for Yokai Watch Busters 2 and Yokai Sangokushi get localized.
Unless if you dare enough to play the Japanese version and try to engage the game despite of language barrier.

@Fizza
Thanks for the overview, I wasn't sure which version of the second game to pick up. I'll go with the Psychic Specters.

@Anti-Matter
Is Moon Rabbit available in the US on the e-shop? I see you said it was available for download via updates. Is that an update to the Red Cat/White Dog games?

@Spunky
Moon Rabbit physical version only available in Japanese version but you will get the English version of Moon Rabbit from USA or PAL version of Yokai Watch Blasters via updates if you buy the games in physical version (Take a note of different spelling for each version. Japan = Busters, USA & PAL = Blasters).
