I want a great jrpg for my 3ds, and i came across Tales of the Abyss 3ds. And i been thinking of buying it, its kinda expensive and rare here in sweden. So is at any good? I want your opinions
there, fixed. i couldn't find an impressions thread, so hopefully i wasn't just blind while looking over the forums or anything :3
that said, i have to admit that i'm about halfway-ish through and i'm struggling to push myself to continue on. i really, really wanted to like this game, and i'm sure i'll like it once i'm closer to the end, but right now it's a bit tough to want to continue — though that could be Theatrhythm talking :3

My, the Dragon's wrath has not fallen upon this thread! I bought this game back in April and I haven't even started it yet so I have NO impressions yet XD
it's an awesome game. I love it. Yeah it's a little hard to get into but that doesn't mean that it's not a great game. I'm liking it and it's easy to pick up and play. You just have to do a lot of level grinding to get past certain parts of the game. So if you don't like that then I suggest you don't get it. I like a challenge though
Want: Harvest Moon: One World, Story of Seasons: Pioneering Town, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury
Finished the Alola Dex.
Now playing New Horizons, Wrath of White Witch and Sword
Its a great game if you like long deep storylines and lots of grinding such as when Final Fantasy used to be good. It really is a home console game on a portable system. I found that I when I most played it, it was when I was at home alone with plenty of time on my hands and very little distraction whereas a lot of my other 3DS games I can quite easily play on the go.

i just wish the little 'skits' had been voice-acted, though. there's so darn many of 'em, and i hate being forced to sit there and read them because if you look away they'll progress automatically and you'll miss something. i really am enjoying the voice-acting in this game, i'll give it that — even Mieu doesn't annoy me :3

hmmm thats true, I wish they had voiced the little 'skits' as well as the main parts because its a lot of writing to read and as you say you don't want to miss anything. Mabey this game will benefit playing on the 3DS XL mainly because of all the in game text.

i think it'd benefit by being on the XL if only so that you'd be able to see their faces properly — those little animated portraits, sometimes it's hard to see their eyes or mouth expressions, lol.

I love the story and the graphics are pretty good, the only thing that I didn't like was the combat system. I found myself just mashing the attack button and pressing up and down to use my artes?(think i spelled it wrong)
@Edilicious: i do that too... are we not supposed to? lol :3

You'll want to learn what you're doing before you get half way through and it starts to get harder. There's actually a lot of skill involved in the combat, making good use of skills, skill combinations and your diferent types of normal attacks.
EDIT: Just saw that you're already there. You might want to take a little time to practice just so you get used to using some thought in your actions. Especially in the boss fights button, mashing is more than likely just gonna screw you over. IMO, the combat's not that hard to get, but then again, I play fighting games frequently, so take that for what you will.
I actually love this game! And what's this people are saying about grinding? There was only one point in the game I had to do it, and it wasn't that much.
I honestly enjoyed it more than SM3DL and MK7. I love collecting titles (especially the ones that give you new costumes), the characters, the story, and everything else about this fantastic game.
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
If I hated Symphonia with a passion, should I buy this?
Depends on what you hated, except in originality, Tales of the Abyss is a massive step up in nearly every area, at least in my opinion (though I've found few who have said otherwise).

You have to grind if you don't know what you're doing. I only ever grind near the beginning of any Tales game simply because I'm still learning, and even then I find it doesn't help much. I remember in Vesperia I was stuck on a boss, so I grinded 3 levels, yet stilll had just as much trouble on it. I just had to learn how to beat the thing.
@MickeyMac I beat the whole game actually, it does get harder and button mashing isnt as effective but I always found the combat clunky and boring. The curiosity of the ending is what really pushed me to beat the game but like I said the fighting was dull for me but like I said the story is great
