Is there in-depth record keeping? Do they record your best score for a course, for example? Is there any type of tournament mode? Are there any achievements to work towards?

They record high scores. As for tourny mode, no there isn't. You can buy the ability to play as your Mii, a few special clubs, and the ability to buy "plane tickets" to harder courses.
The high score is good enough for me. I didn't expect anything too involved for only $5, but I do like to compete against myself and it sounds like that's included.

There's high score and also medals to achieve by completing a cup in fewest amounts of strokes. Even in the first cup is hard to get a gold medal.
How do you actually play the game? How do you line your shot up and swing the club? I've never played any sort of golf game on my DSes.
There are two ways to play the game, either with buttons or with touch. If you use touch you touch around a circle to choose where you aim and then pull the club back to swing(timing it to an accuracy bar). If use buttons you just use the circle pad to choose where to aim, then time to a click to a power bar and then time a click to an accuracy bar. It is kind of hard to explain... but I gave it a go!

I found this game to be a bit average, although fun for a playthrough.
Upsides:
Very nice presentation and visuals.
Quick to pick up and play.
Fun concept.
Cheap
Progress doesn't require grinding away for hours, so it doesn't feel repetetive.
Good game-length for the price.
Downsides:
I've experienced a number of freezes/crashes and had to restart my 3DS.
On at least one track, the out-of-bounds geometry is misaligned with the visuals, i.e. you can get out of bounds on a ball that is clearly inside.
I think the Physics could have been better, it just doesn't feel right in places ... it gives the game less replayability because I just don't feel like developing mad-trick-skills.
They probably could have been a bit more creative when designing trick-shot challenges and courses.
Hmm. I have not had any issues with freezing. I don't see anyone pointing it out before, but the pro and super cups are basically the normal holes, but flipped around, and more obstacles.
I think I personally expected this game to have more puzzle-ish elements to the courses (more like Kirby's Dream Course, where you have to figure out how to beat the course). Instead, it's a simulator of real-life mini-golf.
I am sorry to say, but it is more or less like one of the better iPhone games.
It's not bad, and you can certainly use it to pass time... but it lacks that certain something that makes you come back to it again and again.
I bought the game now and it's very enjoyable. Actually I really dig the out of bounds thing since you really have to do the difficult shots, instead of wiggeling your way through. BUT II'm very very disappointed about the courses. It's just the same 21 courses rehashed over and over again (the Pro cups are basically mirror mode)....
I find this game looks graphically worse compared to their WiiWare games... but it still looks nice and the cars and birds going around the screen are a nice touch.
Not a fan of the Super or Pro cups, basically the same as the normal courses but with more crap in the way. But it's nice to pick up and have a quick putt-putt around a few courses for a few minutes. Definitely worth a buy, but it feels too short for my liking... I would've liked more stuff to buy too, more clothes, shoes etc. because now I'm building up massive amounts of money and nothing to spend it on.
