Hi ACNL gang! Does anyone want to add me as a friend and let me visit your town and sell my turnips?? THey are going to spoil after today and the prices for turnips in my town have been a joke all week. A town that doesn't have cherries as it's native fruit would be best cuz that way I can sell these perfect cherries while I'm at it.

I'm also available for pulling weeds in your town if you need that sort of accomodation.

Anyways, let me know!!! RAWR~

Does anyone have extra gold tools? My town was deleted during a system transfer and I lost everything...

SPACING AROUND PUBLIC WORKS IN ANIMAL CROSSING NEW LEAF - PLEASE NOTE FOR GENERAL REFERENCE
I'm well aware that the game ignores any paths, trees and hedges we may have planted when it sites a new animal resident's home. However, given the strict rules that Isabelle enforces when we are choosing a site for a Public Work project, I assumed there would also be some mechanism that sympathetically recognized the existence of our projects, and new homes would not be crammed directly in front of these.
I've been playing since last June when the game came out in Europe and my town is quite well developed, but I have left large areas where new homes could be placed. I was prepared to re-site any affected pathways or vegetation, and I thought I could probably safely allow animals to move.
So........ my first new animal resident's home has been placed just TWO squares in FRONT of a fountain statue!! If I had known the game only allowed two empty squares even in front of any public work project I could have sited it differently, or put a bench in front to block the area.
If, like me, you think it's time for a change of faces in your New Leaf town, please bear the above in mind.
In this instance, no matter how charming young Genji rabbit proves to be, he will find himself on a fast ticket out to another town ASAP.

i am also using public works projects to protect specific areas from getting new houses. so far it has worked but i've only been playing since end of october. i think the max distance i chose between projects is 5 blocks. so that nothing can come between those 2 projects. i really hope it will keep on working like that. otherwise a new villager could destroy parts of my wonderful cedar-forests. it takes so long to make cedar-forests :/

the next animal crossing game should allow you to slect areas where animals can build their home and ONLY there.

@6ch6ris6: Using 5 blocks as a general rule of thumb to protect a public work project sounds useful advice.
I started to count spaces and work out if a home could be squeezed into the space, but that does sound a simpler way of organizing the layout.
Many thanks!
Once you go down the flower route, they become almost unmanageable. I have a beautiful town ordinance in place and my animals do a lot of watering and planting of flowers themselves. It's really cute to watch them. I've even found they will stick loosely to colour schemes if I go around and re-arrange the flowers they plant. But in many areas I just let them do what they want.
I visited your pinewoods sometime before Christmas (liked them very much), but plan another dream visit after seeing your comments about colour themes. I haven't yet refreshed my town, Saco Bay, following the arrival of Genji - should you be interested in having a dream visit to see what the little public park around my home looked like before he came. I'm over the shock of his arrival now, but will site a strategic bench as soon as he's gone.

you should remeber that there has to be 3 (i think) blocks of empty space in front of a house for it to be built. so the amount of projects you need to build is a little less vertically

@6ch6ris6: Thanks. That's where I was caught out.
Isabelle babbles about "three spaces in front" when discussing a public work, so I had assumed the three blocks required in front of a house also applied to the public work. But from the evidence in my town it appears there only needs to be two blocks in front of those.
Ah well, c'est la vie. We live and learn!
Cheers

@6ch6ris6: had a peek at your dream town last night. Still resisting paths, I see, but all the better for that.
More Wild World than New Leaf in some ways. I loved Wild World and wish the games were compatible.
Love your cedar tree woodlands and your cabin in the woods

@Mowzle thanks i love my cabin in the woods. wish i had something like that in real life
what do you mean with "more wild world than new leaf in some ways"?

@6ch6ris6: Without paths your village has that lovely "off in the woods" feel about it that I loved about Wild World.
My New Leaf town has two humans who never run, and I only have occasional visitors, but I still had bad grass degradation, even in areas where we very seldom went. It's almost as if the game had been programmed to decide where grass wear was most likely and just degraded in those areas regardless of the foot traffic. Grass also degraded in the areas where foot traffic was actually heavy. So in the end, because I hate looking at brown and the feeling I'm splashing through mud when it rains, I ended up with more paved areas than I had planned. I tried taking up the paths when it snowed, but snow didn't settle on the worn areas and so I just re-laid them. I have actually come to enjoy my paved areas, but I vary them a great deal and change the tiles to fit the seasons to my taste.
I do think this grass degradation has been taken to such extremes by the Nintendo design team that it detracts from the game to a considerable extent. I don't know whether it would be possible to issue a patch to reduce the impact of this "innovation", but if it was I wish they would do so.

i dont really understand thow the grass degredation works. sometimes it changes in my town within 2-3days. and the part with the most degredation is one that i only walk through once every day.
i dont think i will every use paths. even the best ones just look "okay" to me.

still dont know why you think my town has a wild world kinda feeling. just because of no paths? you could lay paths in wild world aswell or am i wrong?

@6ch6ris6: Yes, you could lay paths in Wild World, but I preferred not to have pathways, and there was no visible grass wear in that game. So I just kept to a grassy landscape, which is what you have in Pinewood. I suppose that's why it reminds me of my much loved Wild World town. No other reason in particular.
I'm no computer geek, but I do think the drawing/design tool in New Leaf is probably more sophisticated than the one in Wild World, so skillfully drawn pathways can blend in with the landscape and look much more realistic, as long as one avoids overhangs on cliffs and riverbanks.
Your grass seems to be coping very well in larger areas than my town. I started playing in June when the game first came out in Europe, but that may have nothing to do with it.
