What's good about games like TF2, is that there is no set goal, apart from winning, so this is a place where the achievements really shine. It's games where there are no story plots, and offering multiple plays that are good for achievements.
Apart from those servers and custom maps which are built to give you achievements at a rate of about 5 a minute... I unwittingly joined one of those. MAYHEM. And not fun at all. I wouldn't grind for achievements because 1) it ruins the idea of achievements and 2) it's a complete waste of time since they don't really affect anything.
Press the guide button, scroll 2 pages to the right and click on "notifications". There will be an option to turn them off. I believe this also blocks "friend is online" notifications, but if you're doing a single player game that shouldn't matter.
ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!?!?!?!?!?!??!!?
I can finally buy a 360!! That was the main reason why I never bought one was because of the annoying onscreen distraction. It was the main element holding me back.
Achievements are the worst "innovation" to ever happen to gaming. I remember playing an emotional part of a game on the 360 only to get a cheesy onscreen alert.
"Achievement Unlocked: Seasoned Dark Elf Roast" What a way to kill emersion.
Yep, you'll be good. Just keep in mind if you turn it off you won't see a notice about a friend being online, so you might want to press the guide button from from time to time to see whats up with your peeps.

Might also be worth pointing out, from a value perspective, that virtual trophies are really no different (although easier to come by) than real-life trophies.

Wrong, real-life trophies can make a pretty penny at auction.

Pretty lousy reason not to get one. Minus the emotional part.

Depends on the trophy Most of them, no, but if you do land a perpetual one for some reason, I guess you're right there
Having owned all three consoles having and experienced trophies+achievements, I would like them to be added. However, I don't really care too much if they're not.
What I'd rather see is some sort of system where you can 'obtain' things with the points you gain from earning achievements. As in, some sort of universal online shop that offers rewards of varying values depending on how many points you have. You'd still have a 'grand total' of everything you've collected for bragging rights though. And if you're not into having the pop-up messages, you could always turn them off and completely ignore the system itself. Please those who want it, please those who don't. Doubt it's happening any time soon though. xD

Well, at nr2, it kinda effects the game since you unlock weapons with them
Maybe unlocked special items for Mii's, menu backgrounds and styles, etc....Maybe unlock special weapons and outfits, for games like SoulCalibur and Smash Brothers, just by playing other games.
Starting tomorrow those little trophies actually get you free stuff alongside game purchases, etc. Im guessing tomorrow we will learn the full details.

@slapshot, yeah i'm intrigued to see what Club Sony will be like. If buying ps3 games and getting trophies gets me free DLC or PSN coupons/downloads, itll be alright by me.

Are you pulling my leg? If we get free stuff from them, well, Ii'll go crazy trying to get em' and i'm sure Stuffgamer will be getting free stuff left and right.
Interesting... Sony beta testing a Club Nintendo like program... Let's see... Themes, Avatars, PSHome freebies... Play enough, spend enough, fill out enough surveys and get a free trip to the Consumer Electronics Show in 2011... Yup, sounds a lot like Club Nintendo. Pity it's invitation-only beta for Plus members and members of the Gamer Advisory Panel...

It's a shame that the beta os PS Rewrads will only be in USA.

Please tell me you're not actually claiming that Nintendo somehow invented the concept of a loyalty club.
She never said anything of the sort. Just saying it's a lot like Club Nintendo runs. (but I don't see that many similarities besides the spend and reward).

Actually it sounds more like just about every loyalty club I've ever come across.
(and besides that, Square Enix, not Nintendo, has the best loyalty club goodies, I would hope that Sony "copies" that one first)
@Waltz: she's just using it as a comparison. no need to jump down her throat about it :/
