So, for Christmas I might be getting a new 3/2DS (haven't thought about which one yet) because the one I'm playing on now is... quite old. It's the original 3DS XL and I've had it for about 6 years. And while it doesn't have any problems at the moment (apart from having a partially broken right hinge and being extremely scratched up on the back and front), I'm a bit concerned due to it's age. I have some old cartridge games from when I had my little pink DSi, but really the only things I really play on my 3DS at the moment are Tomodachi Life, Animal Crossing New Leaf, and Rhythm Heaven Megamix. All of these games are stored on my SD card. If I were to put the SD card into the other DS when the time comes, would all my data be there? Or would I have to tinker with it to manually get it transferred? They are all digitally downloaded, by the way. RHMM is kind of a "duh" because in the US it's download only, and I'm scared if I were to buy TDL and ACNL as cartridges, I'd lose them.
So, anyone got any information...?

@AlulunaToons 3DS models were discontinued, and only getting more rare. And 2ds is likely in the same boat. I wouldn't wait.

Others here are welcome to double check the following: 3DS cartridge game progress is saved on the cartridge. The SD card will only have the game on it (not game save progress). I don't know how DS cartridges worked.I think DS carts might be the same.

I believe you can move your sd card to a new 2ds/3ds? But, I think you have to link your new 2ds/3ds console to your nintendo account first?

If you wanted to it, the Nintendo support line is very good. I've used it 3-4 times myself. If you go this route, it helps to have the Nintendo support site open on a computer, in case they point you to a page with directions. It streamlines the call.

They still sell them at Walmart in my state for about 100 dollars, and show no signs of being pulled off the shelves tbh. But thank you for the info.
