Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Atelier Ryza 3?

There is no choice for 9.5 so I chose 9. Best in the Ryza trilogy by far.

I'm not rating this game because it wasn't for me anymore, despite advocating for the series previously so it wouldn't be fair to it.

I'm just gonna paste what I said in the recently dropped games thread about it, I don't have the energy to re- write what I thought about it.

It absolutely breaks my heart to say this, especially as all I've been doing is writing passionately about the series on here, even recommending it to others but... I dropped Atelier Ryza 3 Now I will never see how the trilogy ends.

I know its a me problem and how my brain works specifically and not the game's. but I hate that they have made it pretty much open world now. Those little segmented areas to explore in the previous games were so much less stressful to me, I could gather half of the maps materials, bring the basket back and then come back to do the other half but that's just not possible in Ryza 3. Maybe that's not how you're meant to play it, but that's how I enjoyed playing it, I never left any stone unturned, and I always had plenty of ingredients playing this way.

I actively sought out and beat every monster I could in the previous 2 games mainly because the combat is so fun, but now there seems to be so many of them all of a sudden and you can't seem to avoid them to gather like you could before. Not only that, they respawn when the time of day changes, I don't remember that happening, unless you left the map and came back or entered a cutscene.

Speaking of cutscenes... Where are they? even beelining from A to B which I did try to do there was no character interactions at all.

Everything I loved about this game is gone, it went from relaxing zen to stressful and anxiety enducing within 1 game.

The hardest thing is, that this will be the norm from now on. The overwhelming majority love open world games, I do too but it doesn't work in Atelier, at least to me, and as devs why would they take steps back, they will just go bigger. So yeah the Atelier franchise, I guess I'm out, the remake of the 1st game will be my last I think and that makes me so freaking sad.

This should be a hot take in the unpopular opinion thread too. Not every game has to be open world to be good, and I know everyone will disagree with what I said here but meh, onto Trails to Azure, at least it's gameplay wasn't drastically changed for the worst.

@Nanami_Ataraxia I haven't played the Atelier series. But I agree that going open world can be a detriment to some games. A lot of companies think that going open world is the way to go and I hugely disagree. Having said that, I did love Breath of the Wild and can't wait for Tears of the Kingdom. Although I also really like the form of 3D Zelda before it went open world, hope it also comes back some day.

I wouldn't bank on that, I played the Arland series so I was used to those smalller areas then came along Atelier Firis which was also massively open and could go where you wanted to to pass the exams. It was a breath of fresh air for the series, but the the next game they went back to smaller areas.

So there is a chance that the next atelier series won't have an open world design.

My only gripe with Atelier Ryza 3 is the amount of enemies and no matter what level I am they still come after me.

@Hinade If you have interest in them you should ignore me and go for it including this one, I already know I'm I'll be in the minority with how I feel about it.

I'm glad someone feels the same way. Open world games can be absolutely great if it suits the gameplay, but it seems like every franchise has to follow suit, and since BOTW's innovation, it seems to only be getting more frequent. I liked BOTW too and I'll be picking up TOTK, it just kinda worked for a sandbox style playground, but like you said if it's at the cost of the previous entries in the series and this is the new norm, a lot of people are gonna miss the more traditional dungeon way of doing things, and they certainly arent wrong, and that's exactly how I feel about Ryza 3, I liked it how it was before. I hope for Zelda in particular they can compromise and do both, kinda how there are both 3D and 2D Mario games, although a new entry in the latter has been a while.

For purely selfish reasons I hope that you are right and that we can have both styles of games to suit everybody. I know that open worlds are favourable to most but my stupid brain just couldn't accept it as much as I wanted to keep playing I couldn't.

Oh so it wasn't just me then? There was part of me that thought it was in my head because I was already feeling negative about the experience. It felt like there were so many more of them and they were much more intrusive and aggressive this time around, it really didn't mesh with the chill relaxing dare I say it 'cozy' vibe that these games usually have.

I booted up Ryza 2 just to confirm I wasn't going crazy before I sold 3 and yep the monsters just run away if you are high enough level, why would they choose to take that out, it makes no sense it's not exactly a hardcore game.

@Nanami_Ataraxia definitely wasn't just you haha, in atelier I like to divide my time so I usually go to an area and fight to level up and get materials from enemy drops and then I also like doing the same areas but collecting materials from the map. But this time it feels I can't do that as enemies spot me and chase me even though I'm high level, in previous games they would see me and run away. I've ended up turning the difficulty to easy for when I just want to gather materials so that fights go quicker if they do run into me.

@BenAV I'd reccomend starting it soon then as there's two atelier games releasing this year, actually not too far way as Atelier Marie releases in July.

I guess it makes so sense getting this, if missed the first 2 games, right?

I have the Atelier Mysterious Collection (Atelier Sophie 1 DX, Atelier Firis DX, Atelier Lydie & Suelle DX) and Atelier Sophie 2 in my collection.
I don't know with which I should start.

Willing to bet the 9% giving it a 1 have never played it, unless they have bad taste.

@Nintendo4Sonic Yeah it's very heavy with it's call backs so I would recommend the first two beforehand.

Whoever voted 1 are probably trolls or/and I bet they never played it.

I want to pick up a copy sooner than later. But I haven't played the first 2 games yet. I prefer physical but I do see Atelier Ryza 1 on sale in the Eshop for $30. Should I get that or can I find a physical copy for around that price? I see physical copies of Atelier Ryza 2 on Amazon but not the first game.

This is how the series netted out for me:

8/10. Great game, but took 2 points off due to a reduction in fan service.

Ah, it’s clear in so many areas that even after the delay earlier this year, they still cut corners to get it out faster. That’s just disappointing for a sendoff to the trilogy that probably saved the series. :/ They apparently went with a different translation company for this game than the previous two, so the tone is kind of stiff and weird like they translated it literally instead of localizing and there are typos everywhere in some places… There’s also incorrect information in some of the tutorials and crafting, which is just unforgivable. The small text and the depth-of-field issues make it way harder on the eyes than the previous two Ryza games… Though there’s at least a patch in the works for the DoF. And the minimalistic design in battle seems like a cool idea, but it actively makes it harder to see characters’ HP, so they end up dying in battle more… And I didn’t think the combat style meshed with the alchemic item use in the previous games, but this combat is somehow worse. I’m not even quite sure what it is.

I might just be extra-critical after playing so many Atelier games, I dunno. But I can’t recommend this as easily as the previous two games or even some of the older games. :/ It’s not completely busted and I don’t think there’s anything game-breaking in it, it’s not a 1/10 or anything, but I’m really hoping some of these issues can be ironed out… The series and fans deserves more respect.
